Rare 18th-century coin expected to auction for millions goes unsold
Quote:
The Flowing Hair Silver Dollar — one of the first to be be minted in the U.S. back in 1794 — failed to entice a successful bidder at a recent auction in Las Vegas, reported The Associated Press.
The coin, which features the image of a woman known as Lady Liberty in profile with long tresses on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse, was purchased by coin collector Bruce Morelan in 2013. He plunked down more than $10 million for the dollar — a world record for a single coin.
A different image of Lady Liberty was used for minting silver dollars beginning in 1795.
“Despite the huge realized price of $10,016,875, the fact is (company partner Laura Sperber) and I were willing to go another 30% higher,” Morelan told Professional Coin Grading Services in February of buying the coin.
But Legend Auctions chief executive Matthew Bell said offers for the coin failed to reach a minimum bid, so Morelan will hang on to it.
