Many thanks Luke!

I will have a look at the one in the car (original?) as you described. What part numbers should I look for on the clutch and fan to see if they are original?

I will get one of the modern clutches as well, I am most concerned about reliability, I could try the old one someday for sh@@s and giggles, but don't want to see the heat gauge rising on drive number one.

Dave H does not have a shroud on his original owner '68 Ram Rod. I just double checked my MCACN pictures to be sure.

One other side note, Stefano, the shroud on that Ram Rod is a '69-up piece due to the square bump for the hose strap (that's not there), so it's very likely not original to the car. '68 used a one year only shroud, the upper hose straps directly to the top core support instead of the plastic shroud in both small block and big block cars. </div></div>

The Pics I posted are a 1969 W-31.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe

I revived a great E-Mail from Bill Pritchard (below)

Very cool story from back in the day!!

Hi Ryan,

I'm not sure how I missed it, but just stumbled upon the thread about you buying the 69 W31 that Pete found for you. That is absolutely awesome!!!!! Huge congratulations to you, and being only the second owner is just icing on the cake.

I have a cool 69 W31 story to tell you (a bit lengthy, but bear with me). Back in around 1971 or 72, when I was still living at home with my mom, the neighbor across the street from us owned the local Volkswagen dealership. I had purchased a 69 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 that was traded in there, and a friend purchased a 70 Challenger R/T 440 that was traded in there. Another friend noticed a white 69 Olds F85 2 door sedan that was on their used car lot, and it had gold stripes on the hood, so it caught his eye. Knowing that I had somewhat of an 'in' there, he asked me to find out more about it. The dealership owner (Richard) told me his mechanics &quot;couldn't get the car to run right&quot;, and that it had some &quot;transmission problems&quot; (it was a column shift automatic). They just wanted to get it off their lot for what they had in it.....$900. My friend bought it. It was, of course, a W31, and the reason the mechanics couldn't get the car to idle smoothly was due to the cam that came in the car. The transmission &quot;problems&quot; were the fact that it had a higher stall converter, very high shift points, and firmed-up shifts. Just exactly the way the car came from the factory! I guess the VW mechanics figured all Oldsmobiles should idle smoothly and quietly and shift imperceptibly. Their loss was my friend Bruce's gain. That car absolutely screamed!

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe

Stefano, sorry for the incorrect assumption.

Ryan, I took a quick skim through the '69 Engine PIM section I have, Section 6-1 Page 210 has the clutch options. There are OU/OS/OW... I think it should be the OU, but I didn't have time to verify the engine codes in there, so don't quote me on it.

I have a picture of my original fan clutch ink stamp in my thread here, I think you have a CO account: http://classicoldsmobile.com/forums/...tml#post810643

I've been reading your thread on occasion but haven't gone back to review everything so I'll just ask here (so don't get upset if the answers to my questions are on the preceeding 64 pages!)...

&gt;Does your car have the original radiator support?

&gt;Does it have the original radiator? If so, how many rows in the core (3 or 4)?

If original rad support then check the top and bottom radiator tank brackets...they'll either be for 3 row end tanks OR 4 row end tanks. If you have 3 row brackets/radiator and are considering stepping up to a 4 row radiator then you'll need correct placement measurements for the 4 row brackets (as well as the correct 4 row brackets).

Thanks Patton, I will check soon and post pictures.

I did check and saw slotted bolt holes where I assume the fan shroud was mounted.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe

Sounds good .... just figured I would check as I've seen info in the PIM (aka Assembly Manual) that for some other years talks about two HD radiators...both a HD 3 row and the HD 4 row.

As Luke stated - your car would use the 402995 shroud. It's the same shroud used on the 1970 cars. In '71 they made some changes to the shroud with some extra bracing molded into the outside surface of it. So, go with a 402995 if you need one and you're good to go in the fan shroud dept.

Some aftermarket radiators can be problematic when it comes to fitting them into the factory metal &quot;saddles&quot;/brackets that hold the top of bottom of the end tanks on both ends of the radiator. In that regard the best bet is to use original Harrison tanks as the basis for any radiator build. I would also avoid using any repro radiator saddles/brackets...again, possible fitment-to-end-tank problems. You already know that story....stick with good original stuff whenever possible.

Had the chance to visit Bill Stephenson (Olredalert) and looked at a couple &quot;nice&quot; cars we had such a nice visit. Also proud to sell one of the oddball tires so Bill has a perfect old spare for a W-machine he is restoring.

&quot;Nice&quot; = understatement of the century:-)

Such a nice welcoming couple, hope to see you both again soon!

Here is a bucket list item ticked off my list!!

I have always wanted my muscle car in a car mag, just never imagined this could be possible.

As I have said before, I made a decision on my 40th birthday to get involved in our hobby/passion and have not looked back!!

Phoned my parents to share my excitement with Mom and Dad, happy guy here!!!!

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe

Started kind of figuring out what shifter I want in the car today.

Thought process:

Al already cut the shifter hump, and installed a Hurst Super Shifter:-)
I drove a friends W30 442 4 Speed with the original Hurst Shifter, fantastic car but long shift throws.
If I put a new hump in and the original shifter I am 100% sure I won't cut it out ever.
I need new carpet and feel I can cut for the Day 2 shifter close enough that if I repaired the floor and put the original shifter in I wouldn't need to re-replace the front carpet.
The shifter in the car costs over 300 U.S, or 390 of my dollars:-(
The Day 2 shifter has a straight up 7 inch handle, which is a little far away while sitting in the drivers seat making vroom vroom sounds:-)
The Day 2 shifter is mounted above the rear of the trans so the original handle would be way to long if used with it.
Al sent a T handle knob which I can use if the mood strikes:-)

What I want to do is find a shifter handle and boot that works and looks almost stock and keep the original goodies safe.

The parts I think I want from Hurst are:

5388009 10.5 inch handle (picture above) similar to the original, but the whole word Hurst is used instead of the H.

114 4580. Boot looks classic (picture below) but nothing like the original (picture above)

1361000. Hurst Equipped emblem (picture below) LIKE I would replace the sticky tape with a magnet for changing up the look someday.

Hard to beat the original white/black ball or Hurst T-Handle look but which is what of original parts you have and what Al added?
I still have an original Red-H Boot here I'd be happy lay on you for the project Ryan, boot is nice but some chrome patina as below.

That looks nice, the patina will match my car very well!

We can PM for an agreeable price off the stage:-)

The white ball is part of the Day 2 shifter set up, the black ball is original, and the &quot;Doernor&quot; T handle came in a box. (I will ask Al about it)
