Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Cool stuff Ryan! My second question was...any chance the W-31 is a 2-Door Post car? So great the car found the right home! ~ Pete |

Thanks Pete!!!
That shifter box started this all!! Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
So I am no longer concerned that my small block Olds (SBO) will have less torque and horsepower than my big block Chevy (BBC) had......
My Dad and son came with me to take in a car show with W-Machine-Sam here in Ontario. A great show and a great visit. After the car show Sam graciously took us for a cruise in his 68 442 W-30 auto survivor, then let me drive his 69 442 W-30 4 speed survivor (My First Time driving a W-Machine, actually my first time driving an Oldsmobile Muscle Car) I am hooked. To top this off Sam took us out and gave us a controlled demonstration of W-31 acceleration in his 69 F85 W-31 auto survivor:-) My (BBC) L35 never felt like that:-) SMILEY FACE!!!! (This did not help me keep my car "Barn Find Fresh") I wanna drive it!! Thank you so much Sam for the hospitality!!! Too add to this wonderful day I learned a lot about W-Machines especially all the wheel and tire combinations. (I love the 68 SS11's) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...w_machines.jpg |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I had a great visit and a great chat about engine building and engine testing with a new friend who lives very close to me. I hope he will mentor me through the engine building process along with a few sYc guys that have already graciously offered to support with advice and experience.
Keith has 40 plus years experience, from the totally manual days to the modern CNC, Adcole, Dyno, Data acquisition, era. I was so impressed with some of his concepts and testing processes. (Of course a lot of what he does for twin turbo quick sixteen race cars will not apply for my W-31's) He has worked for five years in a more private engine building and testing environment not encumbered by cost effectiveness priorities:-) I was ready to rip open my Olds as soon as I got home:-) Ryan |

This is what I have gathered from "The Internet" I am not sharing this as gospel, more asking if this is accurate?

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I'm not the most knoledgeable person about production figures but I would love to know where these figures came from and see the documentation. I all of my years of being in the Oldsmobile side of the car hobby I have never seen or heard of factory documentation breakdown of production #s on options and this is what the W packages were in 66 thru 70 and beyond.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I have heard reference to real documents, I will quiz a few more Olds guys as I think of it.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
We had the opportunity to visit with "Pete Leathersac " and his lovely family, we were welcomed and treated like old friends, I was hoping to take them out for Dinner as a thank you but somehow ended up drinking beer and having a wonderful visit "Chez Leathersac ".
What a great outcome of buying a car to make new friends!!!! Thanks again for the hospitality and another Thank You for putting me onto my W-31:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Sam's collection looks awesome! And, yes, the 106 is the build total for your/ my W-31 body style. I haven't seen a break down for automatic versus stick, but the estimate is 40% stick in the 442 model; might be close for the '31 also. The '68 SSll is a rare wheel and I'm glad I'm not trying to find a set......very tough to find.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Thanks for the visit Ryan also our pleasure meeting you and your lovely wife! It was a beautiful summer evening spent w/ great people made even better when old cars the topic of conversation also really nice seeing how enthused your wife is w/ the W31 project too! The dinner cruise folks were waving/looking for you when their boat came back also funny thing was in bed last night my wife asked me what exactly is this whole B-Pillar thing? Again like I said before Ryan, your W31 Post car could not hove found a better home! ~ Pete |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Finally got to meet "NOrthernforce" Dave and I have been missing each other at Chevelle shows for a few years:-(
Had a great visit and showed off my W-31, we could have chatted for days:-) Dave dropped off a few goodies for Rick Pauley to drop off at NOCC. How nice is this, Dave gave me a NOS posi tag, and a nice Chevy hat:-) Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9382-image.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9383-image.jpg |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I am figuring out the cooling system this week:-)
KA water pump pulley:-) I haven't been able to see the code KB on the crank pulley yet? 400269 water pump, is also yet to be determined. I also wonder if the car should have a fan shroud? What I looked up so far says W-31 had no shroud.....Al (original owner doesn't remember one) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...410-shroud.jpg Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
All 1969 GM a-bodies had shrouds
Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
So I will keep looking for one

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Stefano, could I bother you for a part number?
I don't want a new part, as I have seen you can still buy these from GM, but a modern part:-( Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Not sure w/ '69 W31's but besides HD cooling, some rear axle ratios dictated whether shrouds were included w/ other 68-72 A-bodies. Destined for Canada or CA may make a difference too but what axle is your car Ryan also is the ratio of the one Stefano posted known? ~ Pete |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Mine has 3.42, I think Stefano's is 3.91
V02, vs V01 Radiator Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ton of info (and arguments) about shrouds here: http://classicoldsmobile.com/forums/...n-shrouds.html
Post 13 starts a discussion on '69 W-cars. The PIM appears to say "no" for an OAI car with manual trans, other people are saying "yes they got them". If you are planning on street driving this thing, I would put the shroud on it. Points for correctness don't matter when you are puking antifreeze everywhere on the side of the road. Dave H does not have a shroud on his original owner '68 Ram Rod. I just double checked my MCACN pictures to be sure. One other side note, Stefano, the shroud on that Ram Rod is a '69-up piece due to the square bump for the hose strap (that's not there), so it's very likely not original to the car. '68 used a one year only shroud, the upper hose straps directly to the top core support instead of the plastic shroud in both small block and big block cars. |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Thanks Luke, I will definitely be using a shroud!! After a 41 year sleep this W-31 will be driven, she needs to be reliable!
Do you know the part number, or have pics of what to look for? Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
No prob. 402995 (more details in that thread). They were still available NOS a few months ago, or a wanted ad on classicolds should get you more of an original/patina nice one if you are going for the unrestored look. Should be easy to get one.
There's a generic HD Delco fan clutch for later Olds 307 that should bolt on and keep it cool as well if your original is toast. I don't have the p/n handy at the moment... It's not a perfect original, but with a shroud, you can't see the clutch anyways... My 68 has the original OS clutch in good shape, I may switch to the new HD one so it stays cool. Haven't decided yet... |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Great stuff!!
I will find one!! (Shroud) How do you test the clutch fan? Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
The most obvious issue would be leaking fluid. Other than that, you can try to spin the fan with the clutch stationary, and the fan should "drag" and not spin more than 1/4-1/2 revolution. If it freewheels, it won't be spinning under load. Of course, the final test is keeping the car cool at idle. You should be able to give it a quick spin test without worrying about ruining the "barn find" patina for MCACN.
The AC Delco HD clutch is 15-40108, found it. If your clutch is good, I'd be inclined to run it, use this number as a backup or if it wants to run hot at idle. |
