Re: Biscayne Resto Project

This is the kind of stuff that makes working on cars a pain in the a$$........I bought the door seals from Soft Seal....never had a problem in the past.....Installed the Driver side seal after spending a 1/2 hour figuring out which seal was for which door (rh-lh) and then the starting position to get the pins to line up with the holes in the door.......they have a Red starting pin in the seal....but no directions as to where that pin go's to start the assembly.......finally figured it out (actually.....I asked my wife cause she know's everything).......after installing the seal .....I "TRIED" to close the door.......No way is that door going to close...........got online and ordered the Steele gaskets......hopefully they will fit better...It just amazes me that they get away with selling something that isn't even close......I can't even close the door enough by forcing it to get it to the second latching position.........Anyone else have any advice.....can't find NOS seals........SoftSeal vs Steele????

O.K. .......After cooling down and going back in the garage after my "Nap".........the seal seems to have compressed itself with the door partially closed and I pushed it and it shut........I would have bet that it would never have closed...........Oh Well!!!.....She told me that would happen.......
I took the Nova out of the Bubble and it wouldn't start in the driveway even though it started easily earlier....ended up just being corrosion on the + terminal....next year I'll disconnect it before storage....Duhhhh!!!

Ken,

Looking Great....I too had problems with Soft Seal.....I have never gone back ever since I switched over to Steele Rubber Products. How ever NOS rubber is always the first
choice. I can still find NOS rubber for Chevelle Post Sedans...so I`m sure you can still find an NOS pair for your car. I`ll keep my eye open for you.

I'm going to replace the Door seals with Steele seals, they should be here on Wednesday.....Assembled the front Sheet metal and installed the grill assy.....I have the Bumper/Lower Grill assembly assembled and ready to go on, But I ran out of new 1/2" bolts for mounting otherwise it would be on the car......Waitng for the Seat Covers and Windlace to show up (Hopefully this week) so I can get the Headliner put in and get the front and rear glass put in....still waiting for the new Radiator that is also supposed to be in this week also.....My target when I started this Project was to be Finished in the 3rd week of May....... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Biscayne Resto Project

Got the Steele Rubber Door seals in today and put them on.........No comparison between the seals ....these things "Fit".....they have the little metal screw tab as do the factory seals and they came with instructions that were very clear......even the Trunk Seals have a detailed Instruction sheet showing the correct way to Install the seals........How many times have you gone to a show and noticed the trunk seals installed incorrectly......all it takes it a little piece of paper to show the First timer......Thumbs Up to Steele for a Quality product

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC04643.jpg

The Door actually shut............
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC04644.jpg

Then there's this nonsense......It was too easy to just order simple stuff like a Windshield Washer Hose Kit...it was $14 and some times it's just too much trouble to run to the parts store for evert little thing so I ordered one.......I went in the basement and brought it up to install and when I opened the package, this is what I found........I feel sorry for you guy's that do this for a living, my patience level is at an end for these guy's that sell this "Junk"......Open another box that came today that should have had a Radio Speaker and Antenna that I was promised was in stock and "No Speaker" (Back Ordered) and they sent a Rear mount Angled Antenna......I'll be glad when I don't have to deal with these "Liars" anymore.....here's my Washer Hose Kit......(A little short????)......Not even funny

Re: Biscayne Resto Project

It still amazes me today with our technology and demands that so many of the suppliers make junk. Little details are missed as are huge ones. I say it over and over again, you are paying a tool and die designer to sit there at a drafting table to design the tooling to make the part. It takes no more effort or money to do it EXACT the first time instead of half ass especially when they normally have an NOS part right in front of them to take measurements from. I am always told the same thing, "you are the only one that has complained". https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif The resto parts business is in the billions, why can't they make them correct?

Looking good Ken, you are almost there. Just last night going through this thread I asked myself why (I) did not buy that 396 4-speed Biscayne I posted instead of letting someone else have it. What a sweet ride that would have been. Plus I could have parked next to you at the shows. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Brian........As you and Joe know and I am finding out....Again.......Original NOS parts are the ""ONLY" way to go for a true restoration.....unfortunately, sometimes the repro route is the only option.......Like Rick said earlier......Most of these guy's that are in the Repro business are in it for one thing only....$$$$$$$$.......and the people in the Sales end of it, have no choice to sell this "Crap"..........Taiwan, China, all "JUNK" or substandard product..........I bought some Repro Window cranks for my Chevelle 4 years ago, looked beautiful......put them on and the Spline portion was too deep into the handle and didn't engage the window crank.....just quite didn't engage.....so you had to push in on the handle to get it to work.....took them off and sent them back and was told "AGAIN" that I was the only one to complain........bought some more 4 years later for a different car and guess what.......Yep!!........you would think that someone would have figured this out by now and corrected this problem........In addition to the Substand product......these guy's that continue to sell this "Junk" have no concerns about giving value for money....Guy's this is a "PROBLEM" that alway's get's swept under the Rug and is a problem that no one wants to address......Why??......

I feel your pain. What color is your interior. On my 68 nova I waited 2 months for a ivy gold carpet. The vender I ordered it from just kept saying next week. Then 2 months later no carpet so I called another resource and they had it in stock and I had it in three days. You could say I was not a happy person. I have learned when ordering parts to ask if it is in stock and if they say no, I hange up the phone and try another source. Just my 2 cents.
