Had to come back in here for an update and refresher course on pure badness. Car finished up real real nice, and I'm diggin the fuel system upgrade. I'm assuming you've had it out to enjoy it some this year?
Pics would help with that notion? :naughty: |

Thanks Graeme! The car is an absolute blast to drive... in a straight line. As you can imagine it handles like a dump truck with the big block, skinnies, and the stock 11/16 sway bar! But when you plant your foot to the floor hang on... Turbo Diesel tire frying torque!
The car was down for a while.... while practicing launching the car with slicks I managed to absolutely destroy my clutch :burnout: Come to find out, it was no match for the torque this engine makes. Back in January I ordered a McLeod RST twin disc and hadn't got around to installing it. Ever since I installed my Autogear M23 ("wide ratio" very similar to M20 gearset), I have had problems with second gear. It wouldn't shift at high rpm :dunno:. Come to find out the synchro was not mating up to the cone on 2nd gear very good... Autogear blamed their gear manufacture for poor build quality on about 10% of they gears they receive due to lack of maintenance on the machinery at the factory. Autogear took a year, because of supplier issues, but did finally sent me a brand new 2nd gear and new synchro which mate together perfectly. Trans is now back together and back in the car. Thank you George at Autogear for standing behind your product! My front brakes also started leaking. As you know, they're stock 533 4 piston which were sleeved. The calipers started leaking between the sleeve and the bore... These brakes were rebuilt by Muskegon Brake in Michigan in 2020, needless to say won't ever be using them for anything again. The calipers are also now redone, by Caliper HQ in Signal Hill, CA, and working as they should. The pièce de résistance, the fuel system, is also done. Very basic, just thought it would be cool. Not full blown hardcore with a sump and gravity fed pump.. but more of a slick sleeper set up. Had the bracket we made gold anodized and used boat stringer washers mounted to the inside of the trunk floor to install the bracket. The trunk spatter paint and the floors are 100% original paint and unrestored... don't mind the scratches. A period correct Borg Warner toggle switch finished it all off. The pump is a Carter P4600HP and of course the Frame HPG1. Used as much 3/8 hardline as I could. I have since added two small Volkswagen generator terminal boots to cover the electrical connections at the fuel pump. And ya.. the brake release handle is original too, I know it's a little beat up :naughty: |
Super sanitary install on the fuel pump Chuck!!!!!!!

----Very tidy! Nice bends....Bill S

Excellent job on the fuel system! I love anodized parts.
|
Yep...what all the guys said. :scholar:
Very clean works as always Chas. That fuel system is spot on my friend. |
Very nice setup Chuck!
|
Any new developments Chuck? I need a fix of your car!

Nothing new guys. Just "breaking in" the new clutch a little. I am having the car photographed Monday evening for an upcoming issue of All Chevy Performance, looking forward to the photos.
I also registered for a few passes at Pomona Drag Strip this October for the In-N-Out Burger 75th anniversary car show and drag racing event.... Tim, the wheels you sold me are great and are on the car! |

Tim sold me some very nice "survivor" condition 15x4 Cragars. He replied to a wanted ad I posted on the site. The 15x4s I have were restored incorrectly. Will probably work with tubes. I will probably sell them with a disclosure.

Hey Chuck!,What's your best guess it's gonna run in the 1/4 ? |

High 12's should be a very attainable:3gears:
As we know, the MPH will tell the real story:biggthumpup: |

Took the car to the local 1/8 mile track on Thursday night to practice for my "big" 1/4 mile outing on Sunday 10/22, and I'm sure glad I did. Got three runs and could only muster a 1.90 60' leaving at 4,000rpm with 13psi in the tires. These are M&H "Muscle Car DOT Slicks". They definitely bite, I'm running them with tubes. Car ran 8.04 at 90.4mph. Some adjustable shocks are in order to keep the weight on the rear tires. If I can get the 60' in the 1.70s I should hopefully be in the 11s in the 1/4. Not bad for a full weight 3.55 geared 4 speed street brawler.
I also found a clean Edelbrock Tarantula TM2-O intake which should help add some RPM on the top end, unfortunately I won't have it on by this weekend. I think the 496 needs a little more plenum than the Torker has to offer... will pair with a 1" phenolic spacer to keep the classic 70s look. |
67 Camaro...
Love the blue painter's tape...great idea

Is it just me I would love to hear some sound and see a burn out, lol!!
|
|
Love it!
|
Nice!!
|
Awesome!
|
Oh yeah!!
|
Damn, sounds GREAT as it is. I hope you aren't making a mistake with the Tarantula. You may lose some street-ability with that over a dual plane.
I think you need to drop the pressure in the tires a little more for better bite... |
Thanks guys!
It ready has a single plane on it Mitch, a Torker. Plus it’s a 496” engine, don’t think it’ll lose much torque lol Tire pressure isn’t the issue, watch the rear bounce up. Needs a better shock, which is in the works. Got a very experienced drag racer helping me with this. |
I had a Torker on my 496 and went to a dual plane and it's less "picky" about rpm on the street now.
Didn't see the bounce, just saw and heard the loss of traction right on the line. Good you have an experienced helper. |
Looks and sounds GREAT Chuck!! Thanks for posting.
|
Awesome
|
I can tell you the Torker works just fine. Power wherever you want it... It just falls off too soon. If I don't like the Tarantula, I can always put the Torker back on :cool2:

That is hookin' and bookin'! What gear do you have?

I agree Tim! I don't have the intention to race much but you know how addicting it is...
|
Sounded good at Irwindale, I was there!
Im sure that 496 will respond good with that Tarantulas bigger port volume. |
Thanks Speedy! It’s got plenty left in it. My buddy who built the engine and I have been looking for a TM2-O for a while with no success. Want this when we built the engine back in 2019! You going to In-N-Out 75 at Pomona this Sunday?
|
We were going to race at Pomona but the event is sold out!
Ill keep my eyes peeled for an oval port Tarantula thou! |
I'm running at Pomona
I found the Tarantula! Taking it to get Vaporhoned today :beers: |

We had a blast at Pomona. Good times with friends and family. I got to make two passes, should've been three but I blew a heater hose in the burnout box and had to get pushed off the track  haha. Talk about embarrassing in front of almost full grand stands  Best was a 12.17 @114mph. The car was starving for fuel (sputtering on the big end at the top of 3rd gear and 4th gear) so I made a jet change and it actually hurt it more. Fuel pump can't keep up with demand....
I was really thinking it would run high 11s considering the weight of the car, over 3600lbs without driver, and the 3.55 gears so I'm close. I am going to convert the car to 1/2 hard fuel line with a 1/2" pickup and an Edelbrock mechanical pump. After the track I conducted a fuel pump volume test after talking to some drag racing buddies. I removed the fuel line on the secondary float bowl and plugged it into a rubber hose draining into plastic jug. My mechanical pump only pumped 8-9oz of fuel in 12 seconds. Turning on my electric pump, which I had on during the runs at the track, I saw 29oz of fuel in 12 seconds which is about .2 gallons. Probably very close to the amount of fuel I need in a 1/4 mile... too close for comfort! Not that the car is a drag car but I want to be prepared next time. Some things can only be discovered on the track! After I install my new fuel lines and pump, I will install the Tarantua TM2-O intake and bring it to the dyno to make sure we have enough fuel! |
