Dave, Your car is looking great! Can't wait to see it in November.

Are you and Kelly coming in for the Chevelle Show in August?

Grady

A12pilot 06-10-2017 10:49 AM

Thanks, guys! I'd post some more finished ones, but the "Bobinator" would kill me! What a great feeling to pull the car out into the sun and see it finished! I'm still assembling some before and after photos to post up.

I'm thinking of coming up, Grady, but not 100% sure right now. I'd like to combine the trip with a visit to my cousin in Boardman (who I'm trying to convince to take his 69 SS396 Chevelle to the show! ) and hit the Mopar Nationals in Columbus. Kelly may or may not come since she may go to Tahoe to visit a friend who's having a big 40th birthday bash thing. But we'll see....I can be pretty persuasive, and since she knows Mikey will be there:hmmm::biggthumpup::laugh:

Cheers

Dave,

Car looks very good. I'll have to go to the show in November to see it.

It was asked before, but what routes do you fly?

Morty

A12pilot 07-30-2017 12:01 PM

Thanks, Morty. I'm mainly on Domestic operations right now and fly to Boston, DFW, Chicago, JFK, Philly, LAX, and the occasional other place here and there. I'm going to be placed back on the international side of things here in the next few months so I'll be headed back to Europe and South America in addition to those exotic Domestic destinations!

Cheers

Cool - being AA Executive Platinum or whatever that means I had to ask. Most of my time is spent on Cathay Pacific.

When i fly domestic I'll listen for your name and I'll cause some an International Incident if it's you - JK :cool2:

Sooooo..... the show is coming, and not being happy with the exhaust on the Beater Bee, there was only one thing to do. Open up the check book and spend more money!

I decided an ECS exhaust was in order, and man, you talk about money well spent? That was money WELL spent! The H-Pipe has all the correct bends, flat spots, and fit up perfectly. Mufflers date coded, tail pipes fit up like a glove. The whole system installed in about :20 minutes with no alterations. Couldn't believe it. I even called ECS to tell them, "You... this...uh..geh....di.....mmmm!" :hmmm: And after I curbed my excitement, formed words that they could understand and thanked them for a great product.:worship:

More this week on a recap of my "Finer Details" on the BB, and a pictorial through my new book that's coming out at MCACN.... entitled, "Me and the Bee. How to restore your classic Mopar in one easy step: Sell It!" .

Cheers
Dave

Dave, you did an amazing job on the Super Bee. Will you drive it after showing it some? I'd be scared to take that out on the road with it being as amazing as it is. Kudos to you on a job extraordinarily well done.

A12pilot 09-21-2017 09:45 PM

Thanks guys! I appreciate the compliments, and if it comes back with me to TX after the show, my plans are to beat this thing like a stolen rental car! But honestly, it's the build for me that's the fun. Don't get me wrong...I love driving them.... but I enjoy the creativity of building it more so than driving them. I guess we'll see what happens after the show. It's been just such a fun experience with the family of the original owner being a part of this too. Really looking forward to the show!

Cheers:beers:

Ditto for you Lawrence! Can't wait to see that Charger!

Dave - car looks awesome. Loving the oil pan! I'm bringing a couple of cars to MCACN....see you there....unless you are flying to Toronto before that :^)
Cheers,
Jim

A12pilot 09-22-2017 02:44 PM

Hey Jim! Thanks...but shhhhh....it's not the correct "402" pan as you know. It's the larger Hemi oil pan giving me that extra quart so when I romp on it, I don't suck the pan dry!:3gears: But....I did get the bottom just misted with the engine paint and a few drips too! I don't know why everyone has such a hard time being sloppy with details like this. Sloppy comes naturally to me! Just look at my paint job.... Ha!!! Looking forward to seeing you in Chicago. No YYZ layovers just yet, but next year for sure. I do owe Dave Carson a burger too....so that'll be a great chance to meet up!

Cheers

Dave

----Dave,,, Sometimes creativity takes the form of restraint, and you have practiced that so well. So many restorers over do things in the quest for perfection. I may be one of them, but you have mastered simply doing what the factory did. I believe its easier to over restore a car than it is to do it as the factory did it........Bill S

Your secret is safe with me. But it is a deduction for having a longer oil pickup tube - Lol.
I did the oil pan drip thing years ago when I put a car through OE gold judging at the Nats. They didn't know what to make of it...until I showed them pics of how it was before the resto...and a few pics of some other survivors.
T.O. next year - cool! We can get Dave Carson over to my place and I'll cook up the burgers...and maybe wash them down with a canuck brewski.

I'm not sure many know this, but I'm going to enter my car in a small, local event called the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Chicago. This small, unknown show, has really been gaining popularity and I figured I'd bring my car all the way from Texas just for the heck of it:smirk: . No awards or press or anything....just a few cool cars in a room. :burnout::rolleyes2:So with that said, here's some details I did on the Bee.

This first one shows the block bore size markings that were noted each cylinder to ensure the builder knew what size piston in relation to the bore side to get. These were done on the bare block then the hemi orange paint was sprayed over that. The survivor Bee I have pictured, really shows how thin the factory engine paint was since it's all but worn off of this side of the block.

Cheers:beers:

In studying how the cars were painted, it was by two guys on either side of the car that walked the length of the car. If you can imagine standing next to a car and trying to paint it quickly, yet make it pretty, there are areas that won't get covered. Mopars were painted assembled so when the engine bay was painted, the underside of the battery tray, underside of the frame rails, basically.... anywhere that took a lot of effort to reach, didn't get painted. Fortunately with my painting skills..... it's VERY easy to recreate these sloppy steps!:naughty::thumbsdown:

Also notice the lower control arm. They were dipped in a bucket of cosmoline, a rust preventative, with a distinct dip line present towards the end of the control arm where the balljoint attaches. Since they were dipped, the runs run [runs run?:hmmm:] sideways.

Cheers
Dave

Since the engine was painted either hanging on a chain, assembled minus the accessories, the oil pan shows light coverage and drips. Hey, if there's one thing I'm good at is drips!! Just look at the paint! anywhooo...now yes, I did use a little but too glossy paint since I wanted it to last a bit longer than the stock factory paint. But I think it was worth it. Also, since I three carburetors to mistune and leak fuel all over the engine:thumbsdown:, I wanted to make sure the paint would hold up.... and single stage works well!

Moving into the trunk, factory sound deadener was painted over. When the Bumble Bee sticker was added, the marker reflector hole was covered with the decal and a razor was used to slice an "X" into it, and then folded over into the hole. It wasn't trimmed neatly. After all... it's just a trunk!

Dave

Along with that..... the trunk hinges were greased and then....yep..... the grease was painted over. I recreated this detail after I painted the whole car. Why? Easy....there is enough flaws in the paint already, that I don't need the extra help of some huge grease blop flying off the hinge onto the quarter panel while I'm painting it!:smirk:

Bottom pic is before the tear down of the car showing variety paint on the grease.

Cheers

Man..... what a whirlwind four days! I'm not sure what happened or who was involved, but I have pictures so I know it happened!

I figured this was a fitting time to close out the Beater Bee thread. The unveiling was so friggin' fun! Kristen and Jeff were so exited to see their Dad's car done. The whole week went by in a blink. Just crazy! Best part? I think I met half the forum here in person!:smile:

Kelly won the Hellen Gibb award for Outstanding Participation in our hobby.... which really means she put up with me WAAY more than is humanly possible, and through ultimatums, threats, and bribes..... walked away with a Gold!:hmmm: I was floored!!!

Can't thank everyone enough for watching my thread, and having been asked "what's next?".....

That's for the ones that may not know I'm into another one! Make sure you tune in because I got a new camera and you know what that means! Yep..... photos that really drive home the fact that I do indeed, have deep seeded issues best not talked about in public!:rolleyes2:

Cheers to you all!:biggthumpup::beers:

.... that would be for Kelly for sure. NOBODY wants to see me that close up!:hmmm::no:

The Hagerty kids ranked me third! I'm telling you.... those kids were tough!

Another highlight of the show, although subtle and not many caught it.... the Beater Bee was on the show tickets! :cool2::cool2:

Still not sure when I'm coming down to Earth.... what a blast!

Cheers

Super job Dave.

Car looks great and the unveil was great. I'm not sure what happened this weekend either. It went by incredibly fast.

Still can't figure out where you get the time to make this all happen. You make it look
easy.

Cheers!!
