Re: Day 2 parts discussion
That looks like the Hooker mount in my friends small block Vega. His had a clear decal at the bottom that had the red heart and the name "Hooker". Not "Hooker headers"

I've always been told these were available in the early 1970's. This one almost has that later 60's packaging and feel. I asked the fellow if there were any dates in the paperwork. Says no. Any thoughts? |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Red Holley fuel pumps came before the blue ones. As I recall, when Holley recognized there was a problem with some of the red ones locking up due to insufficient clearances (end play) caused by heat generated inside the motor part of the pumps, they started painting the "new and improved" ones blue so it would be easy to tell which was which. The color change was somewhere after 1971/1972.

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
I was always under the impression that the color differences were to indicate the gph rates. Red being the low end,
blue in the middle and the black pump being the highest rating. But that system may be something that was put into place in the 1980's or after. However, I would agree that the pump should be at least 1970's based on the body design and America decal. Dave will probably educate us in a bit. Also, what are thoughts on using an early pump with todays fuel? I was probably going to use a new pump and paint it blue all over and apply one of the decals on the bracket. Unless of course one of the old ones will work. |

As Hemicolt pointed out the red and blue pumps dealt with their performance capabilities ...as matter of fact most of the early ads just hyped the blue pump. The blue WAS NOT the new and improved and they came out the same time. The red, original # P-6145AAA (later #12-801) was the street version and the pressure was preset at the factory-I'm thinking 5.5lbs?? and was not adjustable. The blue, original part # P-6230AAA(later # 12-802) was the competition version. It was pre set but at a higher pressure 7-7.5lbs?? and it came with a regulator and the pressure was adjustable. Not sure when the black pump came out probably 1990''s?? Hemicolt, the rubber in the older pumps might be affected by the new gas. I would hope Holley has made new rubber gaskets and diaphrams to work with the old pumps because they are basically the same internaly. Here are two NOS pumps. Red one is in the very early 70's box art and the blue pump is in the later 70's style box. Both pumps are identical outside other than the color and the decal on both is the same. Early pumps had different screws and the cast in Holley logo in the aluminum housing is different than today's versions and some other minor housing differences. These pumps were introduced in mid 1971. http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/...S/IMG_2431.jpg |

I have never seen one in real life all one color but have seen them in Holley press kits or ads. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Thanks Dave. I'm just being hopeful that I find something with a 1969 date.
|
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Carter was another well know brand used in 1969.
Also just noticed the bracket in my earlier NOS red pump and the nos blue one on ebay PXTX posted is silver plated while the later pumps- mid 70's had a gold cadmium plated bracket. Cool little differences. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Here is the replacement pump I got from Holley, the blue one. It was rated at 14 pounds pressure and required the regulator. The earlier (very much new) red one let me down at an IHRA points meet when it would only pump when it was cool. My original one was red, but now 40 years later I'm shocked to find that my Holley rep would have lied to me about the color change thing (sneaky old salesmen anyway). At this late date I can't recall if the red one had the regulator or not. Anyway, this pump is what I used from around 1972 on, on many of my drag race stocker and not so stock racers. The bracket appears to be of the silver variety underneath the layer of "patina".

Here is a picture of the rubber in a new style Holley pump. Would anyone care to remove the bottom plate on one of the old ones and see if it's the same? If so, I could get a nos pump and buy the rebuild kit for the rubber piece.

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
I've had to soak the pump bushing every once in a while on my blue pump. If not, it would lock up with heat.
I do mod them though with this: http://moroso.com/catalog/categorydi...?catcode=32087 |

It really was just a electric version of a stock OEM mechanical pump with some extra gph boost. Wow, another one painted all blue....really an early one. |

Since I was working part time at a local friendly speed shop, I got it warrantied directly by the Holley rep. I'd never compared paint jobs or bracket colors before and was suprised when I pulled if off a basement shelf and saw that it had been all blue originally and had the silver mounting bracket. No, I'm really not a packrat or anything..... |

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
That's the coolest!
Have you been searching old pics looking for the paint scheme? What year fender coves does it have and any chance they're red inside? I like historic racing fiberglass too and have saved a few cool chunks over the years. Although only one's off a car, the below pic is of 3 pieces w/ very significant racing histories. Re: Day 2 parts discussion
A friend of mine gave me a 1975 Midwest Auto Specialties catalog today. I'm sitting here going through it and have found a couple of interesting things.
The Holley pumps that were being discussed a couple of pages ago are in this cat., and even though the pictures are b/w, you can tell that the entire pump body is painted. Also it does have the US type decal. They are calling the Mallory Mark II coils the new design over the old Flash Fire coils and the YL distributors have the standard type caps that use boots instead of the two piece style that the wire slides into. The only distributors that have that type cap are the Rev-Pol series. This cat. is a great Day 2 piece, around 100 pages. I will post anything else of interest. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Cool collection of body parts .. Guy I got the nose from didn't know any history on it . Didn't see any red paint . Still looking at vintage pic see if I can find some history. I can tell you it takes up some space ...

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
i have been holding onto a fiberglass nose to a 'Kenny Kereskey " camaro for about 20 years..it seems to be from an Iroc type Camaro...maybe 89? and I guess it was from a 'Super gas ' car? Something like that..?? Was hoping he would be as famous as John Force some day !! I'll try and post a pic if anyone is interested...not exactly Day 2...but still kind of neat.

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Cool stuff fellas, sorry if we've totally hijacked this thread.
The red coves thought came from an early 80's Trans-Am series 'Vette that had a similar paintjob and was maybe a Greenwood car, if Larry Pantera was here he'd probably know! Yes please post the KK glass also if anyone else here has more please post it too! I don't have a digi shot of the yellow piece but the below pics are active racing shots of the other 2 pieces seen in my above picture. Matching the white #10 pics is easy, race pic is Aug. 1985 and driver MW. The black piece w/ orange showing partly showing @ the bottom right of the upper picture is #97 in the below pic, Jan. 1981 and driver GV. Both were Formula-1 drivers who are gone now so please keep their names out of any replies as there's waaay more to both stories and I don't want to attract attention people searching their names may create. Lots more 'junk' here! Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Has anyone ever seen a set of these? They are BBC Edelbrock finned aluminum valve covers that were cast by Mickey Thompson. They are duplicates of Mickey Thompson valve covers except they mave the Edelbrock script cast into them.

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
I believe so. The Mr. Gasket is probably even more rare. Hurst just has stronger name recognition when it comes to these.

My car had a blue pump on it when I bought it in 1985. It went bad and I replaced it with a red pump around 1986. I swapped the spring out of the blue pump into the red pump. It worked just like the blue pump did for many years. I had to replace it in 2004 when it started leaking really bad. So I bought a new blue pump and it weighed about half as much as the old blue pump. The new pump lasted about 2 years before it started overheating and quitting. Nothing changed except the pump so it wasn't wiring or fuel line location. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Rust in and on the tank could have changed in two years. You could try to put a magnet on the tank at the lowest point, with tape,it can help{low cost try}.
