Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Roger Sortino (WA) owns the Sanders car. I know he was planning to bid on that one to get the engine and make a swap. Rusty had bought the red car minus engine long ago, and by luck found the Sanders engine in a boat. Once those cars became uncompetitive ('64 when the factory backed Mopars and Fords creamed everything else), a lot of Z-11s got small blocks, had the aluminum removed and went back on the streets. Some engines were reused in boats, Chevelles, ect. Some remained with the original cars, but ran Modified Production, like the Strickler car before Bill bought it back.
Very, very few of those cars retain their original engines. And I suppose some that do got decked at some point and the numbers are gone anyway. Verne |

[ QUOTE ]
I had heard about this car growing up. I haven't seen the 69 300 series L-78 since the Chevelle Showdown in 1993,after Brian Caudell restored it. I believe it's a Kansas build Leeds plant. The 1 of 6 claim is a for Aluminum headed L-89's and is a guesstimate as well that has been grossly misquoted over onto these cars now.GM doesn't even know how many were made originally. This isn't an Aluminum head L-89,it was delivered as an L-78 cast iron head to Cliff Parry of Astoria,Il. He drag raced it for one year after he bought it back then.Race track officials had a hard time believeing it was a Legitimate factory built 2 dr sedan 300 series Super Sport L-78 Chevelle,(1969 was the only year this was possible, and very few existed),so Cliff campaigned it as the "GM Reject". He raced it around Iowa & central Illinois and at Beardstown achieved a Super Stock Class National Record. It was forced to run in that class, due to it's questionable claim. It only raced seriously for one year and was soon retired to street racing soon after. Years later it went out to Boyd C. shop in Calif.,then was up for sale at SC Indy months later. When Greg D. bought it in 1989,it had only 6188 miles on it. [/ QUOTE ] Rick, Great history, thanks. And I thot you were a '70 expert! I tell you, those 300s just got no respect https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif . But, they were thumpers indeed https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif !!!!!! |

The Schultz and Shriver Z-11 I sold last year has a Z-11 engine from another car in it. I don't think the car has be

Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
The results of this auction have been posted on the Mecum site. There are 14 pages.
The 69 L89, lot S26, went for just under $71K. With the observations made here and judging by the price it went for, it was not a true real L89. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif The prices many of these cars got still amazes me. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif SSJunkie68-69 https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif |
