In the early 1900's, ground beef was actually a very unpopular food after the release of Upton Sinclair's exposé The Jungle, which revealed the meat packing industry's poor sanitation practices. Not only did White Castle establish itself as the first fast food hamburger chain, but it also helped reshape the public's perception of ground beef by focusing on the cleanliness of its restaurants. The buildings were painted white all over with stainless steel interiors, and employees wore spotless uniforms. Apparently, it worked.

Besides being known for its use of "fresh, never-frozen beef," Wendy's hamburgers also have a signature square shape to them, unlike any of their competitors. Why? According to Thrillist, founder Dave Thomas took the phrase "not cutting corners" seriously. More importantly, he wanted the burgers to be square because the patties stick out of the bun in a way that showcases the meat's quality. Clever man he was, that Dave Thomas.

Only two burger chains received A grades for their antibiotic policies, in a collaborative report published last year on antibiotic use in meat supply chains. That honor went to Shake Shack and BurgerFi, while Wendy's received a D-, and pretty much all remaining fast food fiefdoms received F grades (McDonald's, Burger King, Sonic, Jack In The Box, Culver's, Hardee's, In-N-out, Fuddrucker's, Five Guys, Whataburger, Steak n Shake, etc.). While everyone may have their fave burger joint, it's clear that Shake Shack and BurgerFi are leading the better burger movement with all-natural, hormone- and antibiotic-free meats.

But the hormones and antibiotics taste so good!!

On Earth, you need heat to fuse metal, but in space, two pieces of the same kind of metal will fuse together with only a little pressure. The process is called cold welding, and it happens because of the lack of atmosphere.

You might not know about the plant genus Rafflesia, but you may have heard about the “corpse flower,” a rare type of jungle plant that attracts pollinating insects to its huge flowers by smelling like death and rot.In fact, there are 28 distinct species of this rootless, leafless plant, with flowers varying in size from about 5 inches to 40 inches. Most of these flowers take six to nine months to grow and will begin to decay within a few days.

Tornadoes, hurricanes, and flooding can devastate entire towns at once, but the weather condition that proves deadliest to humans is actually heat. Looking at the numbers from the past 30 years, tornadoes caused an average of 70 deaths a year and flooding an average of 81, but heat caused an average of 130 deaths a year. If you don’t have access to air conditioning or sufficient water, excessive heat can be deadly.

Found all across the United States, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, the mushroom Hydnellum peckii has a pretty unmistakable appearance, particularly when it’s young. This fungus exudes a thick, dark red sap across a white cap, earning it numerous nicknames, from “strawberries and cream,” to “devil’s tooth,” to “bleeding tooth fungus.” Fortunately, neither the fungus nor the sap are poisonous, but they’re both said to be incredibly bitter.

If that is so, couldn't one accomplish the same thing by putting the two pieces in a vacuum chamber, removing all the air, and pressing the two pieces of metal together? Has that been tried? Or am I showing my ignorance here?

Yeah, we are staring at women. They don't stare at us nearly as often.

No . . . you are correct. Also known as contact welding.

ADELAIDE, Australia — Adelaide sweltered through the highest temperature ever recorded by a major Australian city on Thursday, peaking at a searing 46.6 degrees Celsius (115.9 degrees Fahrenheit) as the drought-parched nation heads toward potentially the hottest January on record.

The South Australia state capital city of 1.3 million people beat its previous 80-year-old record of 46.1 C (115 F) set on Jan. 12, 1939, and records tumbled in smaller towns across the state.

Technically, lighting itself doesn’t have a temperature.

Allow us to explain that last fact. Technically, those 50,000 degrees are actually the temperature of the air or other materials as the lightning passes through it. The bolt itself is a movement of electrical charges, and for that reason, it does not actually have a temperature itself.

It’s a myth that lightning never strikes the same place twice. Not only that, but some places (like tall buildings or areas with particularly conducive topography) can see dozens or even hundreds of lightning strikes. For instance, the Empire State Building is reportedly struck by lightning roughly 23 times per year.

Photographs seem to indicate that the “channel diameter” of lightning bolts averages between two and seven inches. But researchers who examined melted metal locations where a bolt has hit believe they’re closer to a just about an inch in diameter.

Lightning researcher Martin Uman has observed lightning channels as long as 90 miles.

Lee Stewart 01-25-2019 01:47 AM

https://i.postimg.cc/CKXQ1w39/BBSfEE3.jpg

Something as short-lived as a lightning bolt can be difficult to measure. For example, have you ever seen lightning without clouds? Probably not. That’s because, though photos can be helpful in determining the general size of a lightning bolt, they don’t capture bolts inside the clouds. As a result, scientists consider photography to be one of the lesser-effective means for measuring lightning.

Lee Stewart 01-25-2019 01:49 AM

https://i.postimg.cc/j5qLDryQ/BBSBOnq.jpg

As Uman explains, a radar set can send out “electromagnetic pulses, which are reflected back by certain objects (e.g. metallic airplanes).” The pulses travel at 186,000 miles per second. So measuring the time that elapses between the emission of a pulse and when its reflection is received allows for the distance to be measured.

Of the top 15 U.S. counties with the most lightning strikes in 2018, 14 were in Florida. Thanks to its geography—bordered by ocean on three sides in a subtropical climate—you’ll find almost daily thunderstorms in some part of the state. The most-struck part? The aptly named “Lightning Alley,” between Tampa and Orlando.

Venezuela experiences more lightning than anywhere on Earth.

In particular, Lake Maracaibo, right off the Caribbean Sea, holds the record for “highest concentration of lightning,” according to The Guinness Book of World Records. There, you’ll find the Catatumbo lightning—colloquially, and terrifyingly, known as the “everlasting storm”—a weather phenomenon that averages about 260 storm days per year, 150 of which feature lightning. Sometimes, there are nearly 30 lightning flashes per minute.

So, why is this region so lightning-friendly? Scientists theorize that the air above the lake is particularly conductive due to the abundance of methane from oil fields—or perhaps it’s due to some mysterious combination of topography and wind patterns

Most people talk about thunder and lightning as if they are two separate things, but in fact, they are just two features of the same phenomenon: Thunder is the sound of lighting. In other words, thunder is the noise created as air expands and contracts rapidly in the lightning’s resonating tube (which one professor calls a “tubular drum“).

Part of the reason some people separate thunder and lightning is that it’s possible to hear thunder from as far as 10 miles away from the lightning that caused it. Just because you don’t see the lightning doesn’t mean it’s not there.

In the United States, at least, men are far more likely to be killed by lightning than women. According to the National Weather Service, 81 percent of the lightning-related fatalities between 2006 and 2013 were men.
