The Statue Of Liberty Isn’t In New York. The Statue of Liberty, which adorns pretty much every bit of tourist memorabilia you can purchase in the Big Apple, is actually not located in New York City at all. It’s technically in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The Original Capital of the United States Was Philadelphia. The country’s capital wasn’t always Washington, D.C. As stipulated by the Residence Act, Philly was made to be the temporary capital of the newly created United States of America between 1790 and 1800, while Washington, D.C., was being built.

Lincoln Created the Secret Service the Day of His Assassination. The president, who was assassinated on April 14, 1865, had signed legislation to create the U.S. Secret Service hours before he headed to Ford’s Theatre. However, the Secret Service wouldn’t have saved Lincoln had it been created in time—the original purpose was to combat widespread currency counterfeiting. It wasn’t until 1901 that its M.O. was to protect the president.

You’ve likely heard about how crazy some of the law enforcement of prohibition laws could be, but it turns out the U.S. government literally poisoned alcohol in its effort to discourage drinking. When people continued to consume alcohol despite its banning, law officials got frustrated and decided to try a different kind of deterrent: death. They ordered the poisoning of industrial alcohols manufactured in the U.S., which were products regularly stolen bootleggers. By the end of Prohibition in 1933, the federal poisoning program is estimated to have killed at least 10,000 people.

The First Face Of The $1 Bill Wasn’t Washington. Nope! The first person to appear on this most common bill was Salmon P. Chase. The first $1 bill was issued during the Civil War in 1862. Chase was the Secretary of Treasury at that time and was also the designer of the country’s first bank notes.

Most $100 Bills Aren’t in the Country. According to The Washington Post, $100 bills are one of America’s leading exports: An estimated two-thirds of $100 bills can actually be found overseas. Uh, why? Well, many are definitely used for black-market purchases and other illegal deeds. But many are held onto as savings, in nations like Cyprus and Greece.

Once again, the Ford Mustang topped the muscle-car sales charts, beating out the Dodge Challenger and Chevy Camaro. Ford moved 75,842 of the ponies in 2018, while Dodge sold 66,716 Challengers for second place, and Chevy sold 50,963 Camaros to bring up the rear. Despite coming in second overall, the Dodge Challenger does get to claim that it's the only one of the three to see sales improve year over year, specifically by 3 percent. Mustang sales were down by 7.4 percent, and the Camaro dropped by a whopping 25 percent compared with 2017.

Boeing and NASA Are Working on Airplane Wings That Could Make Flights Faster

The wing is not too drastically different from what we see normally on the sides of planes. But underneath the wing is a “truss” (basically a support) that holds the wing up from the bottom. The truss would allow an aircraft to fly at speeds up to 0.8 Mach (about 615 miles per hour).

Compared to aircraft from the early 2000s, this type of plane would reduce fuel burn by up to 60 percent.

Like many other fast food chains, Denny’s has evolved over the years, the Daily Mealreports. The chain that now calls itself 'America’s diner' started modestly in 1953. Harold Butler and Richard Jezak opened a donut stand in Lakewood, California, and called it 'Danny’s Donuts.' Three years later, they changed the name to Danny’s Coffee Shops and increased their hours. Butler’s motto? 'To serve the best cup of coffee, make the best donuts, give the best service, offer the best value and stay open 24 hours a day.' Find out the first locations of other fast-food chains.

By 1959, Butler and Jezak had established 20 restaurants and expanded the menu. But they weren’t the only entrepreneurs who knew that coffee and doughnuts were a winning combination. So to avoid confusion with another California-based chain called 'Donut Dan’s,' Butler and Jezak changed chain’s name to Denny’s Coffee Shops. Don’t miss these other restaurants you didn’t know had changed their names.

Then two years later, Butler and Jezak simplified Denny’s Coffee Shops to the name that just stuck: Denny’s.

Valeo Unveils Back-Up Camera That Makes Your Trailer Invisible

According to many, poor visibility is one of the main disadvantages of modern cars compared to older, more traditionally-designed vehicles. A few companies have already presented different tech solutions to improve the overall visibility, including a transparent A-pillar and even a transparent hood which is now an option on the all-new Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. The Paris-based automotive supplier Valeo is taking things a step further by introducing a technology that lets you see through your trailer or caravan.

Debuting at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, the so-called XtraVue Trailer system uses several cameras mounted at the back of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer or caravan. The image from all sources is combined into a single homogenous image which shows what’s happening behind the vehicle on an additional small display somewhere on the center console.
