Re: Chevelle updates

Our very own Tony N. a.k.a. "scuncio" made a little road trip today from Michigan to Ohio to drop off a 12 bolt rear for the Chevelle. This one's a correct early rear end (Nov. `66 for my December `66 built car), so no more fussing with custom offset wheels in the back!

For those who haven't met him, Tony is good people. It was a true pleasure.

As of this afternoon the Chevelle now has a new set of shoes, M/T 275/60 DR's in the back and BFG Comp T/A's (225/70) in the front. I'll get pics up later.

Unfortunately Tony wasn't able to hang out long enough for me to get the tires swapped. As such, Tony got the last ride with the Goodyears on the car. I do need to note that from the last time I drove it to today I did drop the rear tire pressure down from 23 to 19.5 lbs.

I did my best to give Tony an E-ticket ride.

While 1st and 2nd gears were as useless as before, this time 3rd gear hooked, and before I knew it I was on the limiter at 6800. I pulled it into 4th and backed it down.

Hopefully Tony will give his impressions when he has the chance.

Re: Chevelle updates

I decided to take the day off today and head down to Eric's shop, about a 4 hour drive from Detroit. Eric was a great host and showed me his extensive collection of cool speed parts and carb stuff.

I have to say, I am in love with his '67. The paint is gorgeous, it sounds pretty mild (by my standards, at least) and boy it is ever fast. I have owned a lot of fast cars in my time, and am not easily impressed :-). This car would outrun any of my old cars by a considerable margin. It's deceiving because the car stays so composed and tracks very straight.

Thanks for the hospitality and I'm glad you could use the 12-bolt! Hell, with those dates, maybe it's the original one that came out of your car!

Re: Chevelle updates

MUCH better.

I am very impressed with these tires. I gave `em a full-on whack from a ~5 mph roll (still pumped up to 35 psi., that's where the tire store put `em) and it just skittered the tires through 1st and 2nd gear. They're down to 30 now, we'll see how they do next time.

Three things to note:

1) I'm so outt'a practice it's not funny. I can't shift this thing quickly enough...by the time I react to the shift point, it's bumping the rev limiter (of course there's the incessant paranoia of scattering the trans that's running through my mind each time I start to yank the shifter).

2) I really, really can't wait to get that 4.56 screw outt'a the back.

3) Pretty sure the car now needs jet extensions. There's a pronounced momentary lag immediately after the hit now and after each shift that's definitely not an accelerator pump issue or anything like that.

More eventually.

Re: Chevelle updates

Picking off one little gremlin at a time.

The car has had a vibration from 50 mph + since I've got it on the road. To make a long story short, I tracked it down to a pinion angle issue.

Since I had to add all those shims under the motor mounts to clear the Milodon pan, the engine and trans are a little more rearward-tipped than they should be. Combine that with the slightly different upper control arm mount locations on the `68 rear end (3/8" further rearward than a `67 housing according to my research) and the car wound up with a lot more pinion angle than it needed.

I picked up a pair of UMI Performance adjustable upper control arms last week and got them in the car today (not gonn'a lie, that job sucks).

http://static.summitracing.com/globa...-4039-B_xl.jpg

After a fairly significant adjustment, I'm happy to report the 50+ mph vibration appears to be gone.

I have yet to "traction test" the car again since dropping the tire pressure, but I'll get to it soon.

Lastly, a couple of weeks ago I ordered an assortment of decals for the car; a trunk posi sticker, jacking instructions, GM stickers for the doors, and an array of air cleaner decals...I just couldn't stand lookin' at that nekkid air cleaner any longer! (dopey me forgot to order a Tonowanda sticker for the valve cover though )

After a little cuttin' n' pastin', I came up with the following:

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps84d6457b.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps34ff5e2e.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps4cfd4c56.jpg

Admittedly not perfect (there's quite a bit of variance in the font and trim lines between the different decals) and a whisker optimistic (a whopping 9 HP...gimm'e a break! lol!), but it's as close as I could get with the readily available decals.

Does anyone know of a resource who can custom make these decals?

I have two more updates to the car I'm working on, a rear end swap and reinstalling a power steering system on the car.

Hopefully I'll be able to get them done before I have to put her up for the winter.

Re: Chevelle updates

Time for another quick update:

As I mentioned in this post of the 496 dyno thread, I was on the hunt for another pair of rectangle port closed chamber heads before the 496 had even cooled off from the last dyno pull.

Within 2 weeks, our own Joe Smith came through with a good pair of 840 casting cores.

I had originally intended to send them to the same porter who updated the 462 heads on the 302 project, but he politely declined as he's trying to get away from working on iron castings (esp. big block Chevy units) in the interest of sparing himself from further back aggravations. Can't say that I blame him.

At any rate, I asked him who he would recommend I send the heads out to, and without hesitation he advised Chad Speier of Speier Racing Heads.

After discussing my goals with Chad, he agreed to take on the project. I just received the news that Chad finally had the chance to get started on them, and he posted two sneak peek pics on the Chevelle site (and on his Facebook page as well)

A little chamber work:

Steve dropped off the Dominator from the Nova for a freshen-up last week, and I decided to convert it from a 3 circuit carb to a 2 circuit to help clean up its street manners. He picked the carb up Thursday and got it back on the car, then brought the car over today so we could fine-tune it in.

It was too lean on the transition circuit as I had it set up initially, so I fattened it up some and he took it out for a test drive. He reported a 90% improvement, so I gave it a little more fuel and sent him back out for one more test drive. Spot-on this time.

He wanted to get a few pictures of his Nova side-by-side with my Chevelle for a Facebook post. As his FB is set to private, only those on his friends list can see them so I downloaded them and re-posted them so others could see them.

He captioned his FB post: "Off to Lightner Dragway!!!"

Thanks guys. I'm trying to get the last few loose ends wrapped up--as soon as I do there will be much more to come.

While the adjustable upper control arms helped tremendously, I'm still fighting a driveline vibration at....um...."elevated" speeds that has to be resolved before the car can see any track time.

Stupid 60" long drive shafts.....

VintageMusclecar 05-19-2015 09:56 PM

Re: Chevelle updates: shifting gears

I was going to post a new thread detailing the repairs after the catastrophic driveshaft failure, but that would've made 3 Chevelle threads...which is at least one too many.

So without further ado, here's the new trans for the car:

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...pslkhtt9ba.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...pslggu5ekt.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psbeeelkuv.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psilmw5yew.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...pscvo9setw.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psizmx7n4c.jpg

I had several options on the table to consider after the untimely demise of my Muncie.

1) Jerico 4 speed or 5 speed. (5 speed is based on the Nash/Richmond style trans)

2) GForce 101A 4 speed or (5 speed also a Nash/Richmond style tra... Street 5 speed.

5) Legend LGT700 5 speed.

Several important considerations had to be made (aside from cost, none of which were what could be considered "affordable"); Minimal floor pan mods (those done by the driveshaft during it's hasty egress notwithstanding ) , strength, gear ratios, and availability.

I was first interested in the new Richmond 5 speed as it's now rated for 600 lb.ft where the street boxes are only good to 450 lb.ft. Unfortunately, the Richmond won't even be available until July at the earliest, so I had to scratch that off the list.

The Liberty, GForce and Jerico 4 speeds were eliminated for various reasons, mainly lack of a speedometer provision and shifter fitment issues.

The GForce 5 speed was eliminated due to lack of 5th gear OD along with cost.

The Jerico 5 speed was eliminated due to cost and fitment issues.

The Liberty 5 speed was eliminated due to cost and fitment issues as well.

That pretty much narrowed my choice down to the Legend box. For those who aren't familiar with it, this is the same box that Keisler was selling before they went belly-up. Thankfully the parent company who was actually manufacturing the trans' and components stepped up to continue production.

As luck would have it, Jody Haag (Jody's Transmissions over on the Chevelle forum) just happened to know of the whereabouts of an "exact fit" box for my Chevelle sitting patiently on a retailers shelf. A few phone calls later the trans was ordered and on it's way here.

The Legend box addresses 3 of my needs in near-perfect manner:

1) .069 5th gear overdrive. This effectively reduces the current 4.56 gears down to an effective 3.14 ratio, which means rpm @ 60 mph goes down from ~3300 with the Muncie to 2260. Once the 3.73 rear end goes in, that 60 mph figure will drop down to a lumbering 1850 rpm--the highway equivalent of a 2.57 gear.

Road trip anyone?

2) As mentioned before, the primary issue which led up to the failure was the OEM 60" long driveshaft. Thankfully, the Legend is roughly 3 1/2" longer than the Muncie, which shaves the driveshaft down to 56 1/2". (ALSO, with the trans yoke moved back, that should allow the use of a 4" diameter driveshaft!) In addition to this, the new Mark Williams billet CM pinion yoke is 1" taller than the OEM yoke which cuts the figure down to ~55 1/2". That makes a significant difference in the critical speed issue with the driveshaft.

Check out the MW chart to see the difference:

http://www.markwilliams.com/Images/critspeed.jpg

3) The Legend box is not only rated for 700 lb.ft, it is also rated to shift up to 7500 rpm, which is impressive for a fully synchronized transmission.

A few changes are necessary to accommodate the new trans--a swap from a 10 spline clutch disc to a 26 spline, the crossmember will need to be re-located slightly, and the speedometer cable will require a little creative re-routing as the hookup is on the drivers side of the new trans as opposed to the passenger side on the Muncie. However, the shifter is in the exact same spot as the Muncie was, which means no shifter hole surgery will be necessary. It even accepts the previously installed Hurst shifter arm.

I hope to get on the install tomorrow. Once it's in I can measure for the new driveshaft and get it ordered.

I'll report back with pics & more info as things progress.

Looks to be very exciting. I am thrilled to know we'll be getting some honest feedback on this unit.

I've never had to be concerned with drive shaft speeds but it is now on my radar. Careful with 5th gear till you get those 3 series gear in the back! Also looking forward to your comparison of a traditional Hurst shifter to the internal on the Legend box.

I'm sure you will work your way through this "potential Problem" ...

VintageMusclecar 05-20-2015 11:57 PM

Re: Chevelle updates: shifting gears

I was right...one snuck by me.

When I installed the Quicktime bellhousing, I re-used the trans mounting bolts I'd used with the reproduction 621 bellhousing that was in the car before. They are 1/2-13 X 2" along with a lock washer and one flat washer per bolt.

I didn't notice that the upper two holes on the Quicktime bellhousing were partially blind. When I installed the Muncie onto the Quicktime bellhousing, the upper two bolts just barely bottomed out before drawing the trans down fully tight. They were tight enough where no play could be felt, but I'm sure in operation there had to be at least a slight amount of movement. I did note that the broken ears from the Supercase were still somewhat tight to the bellhousing when the broken trans was removed, but they weren't fully tight.

I measured the thickness of the mounting ears on both trans', and the Legend box is notably thicker (exact measurements are out in the shop, I forgot to bring them in with me).

Below are two pics of the new Legend trans with new 1/2-13 X 2" Grade 8 bolts along with a lock washer and two flat washers on each bolt. They are snugged down pretty tight, and as you can see they terminate just about perfectly out the back of the bolt bosses on the bellhousing.

Driver's side:

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psho0xhhrp.jpg

Passenger side:

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psopdqklrs.jpg

Here's the mounting face of the bellhousing showing the clean-up skim cut it received on the mill after putting the lower passenger side mounting tab back into position.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psayylkrvw.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psrrqqqen2.jpg

As you can see, it was barely enough to remove the powdercoating. It's again parallel to .000"

The clutch disc has been swapped, a new pilot bushing has been installed, and the bellhousing is back in place. I'll try to get the trans under the car tomorrow.

More to come.

Trans is almost in...trying to find that last .001" of wriggle room to get the input shaft to go into the pilot bushing...going to have my lovely assistant Rachel work the clutch while I try to get the trans wriggled the rest of the way home.

Four things to note so far:

1) This trans is HEAVY!

2) This trans is BIG!

3) It looks like the shifter is going to fit the factory opening pretty well.

4) I don't advise doing this solo with the car on jack stands unless you're a good bench presser.

Here's the new MW CM pinion yoke next to the OEM unit:

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psatbqtdcx.jpg

I tried to get the yokes swapped out so I could measure for the new driveshaft but I ran into a small snag--I need to get a new pinion nut to work with the MW yoke. The factory 1 1/4" nut is too big and the socket won't fit in the well of the yoke. I need to pick up an aftermarket 1 1/8" nut from Kammers this afternoon (hoping they have one in stock!)

More soon, but I'm off to get cleaned up. Rachel and I are finally taking a (partial) day for ourselves and we're going to Kil-Kare tonight to watch test & tune...if it doesn't rain.

Ever get that feeling that you're being ****ed with by inanimate objects?

Picked up the new pinion nut from Kammers yesterday on the way to Kil-Kare. I crawled under the car this morning to install the new MW yoke, and the nut absolutely refused to start on the threads.

Pull the yoke back off, the old nut threads right on...new nut barely goes 1/4 turn and that's it. Long story short, the threads on the pinion were slightly boogered up from the factory nut. I hop back onto Al Gore's intrawebz and after a couple of quick searches find out that the pinion thread is 7/8-16...an oddball size, wouldn't ya know?!?

Burning up the phone lines to try to find a die of said size--check the local high-end tool emporium...nope, not in stock. Check Kammers, no luck there either.

SO...I crawled back under the car, and wound up using the new pinion nut to chase the threads on the pinion;

Clean the threads on the pinion & nut, oil both, start the nut, give it 1/8 turn with the ratchet, remove, clean everything and start the process over. After ~10 minutes I finally have the threads cleaned up.

So I slide the new yoke back in place, put the washer in place, start the nut, then run it down snug with the ratchet.

Since the rear has a solid pinion spacer instead of a crush sleeve, the nut gets torqued to 125 lb.ft. I set the torque wrench, slip the socket over the nut, and wouldn't you know it, there's not enough room to swing the torque wrench before the end hits the floor.

As Clint Eastwood said in "Heartbreak Ridge", "You adapt. You overcome. You improvise."

Suffice it to say the nut's torqued. (almost as tightly as the owner by this point...)

Driveshaft has been ordered from Mark Williams, should be a week or so out. That should give me enough time to get the crossmember and speedometer cable figured out.

Not sure if I'm going to put an X-pipe back in the car at this point or not. That's something I'd planned to test on the chassis dyno once all the other bugs had been worked out, but obviously that plan didn't work out. I'm thinking about going to a conventional dual system for now just for simplicity's sake, and maybe later on down the road I'll make up another x-pipe to test it against.

More eventually.

Your car sounds like a passionate Italian woman I used to be friendly with. A great ride but you earned every bit of it in combat
