Cooling system update
I noticed some coolant on the front passenger floor mat and assumed the worst. After running a pressure test I noticed the heater core wasn't leaking but coolant was seeping past the hoses as the heater core tubes were dented and not providing the best seal. I decided to temporarily bypass the heater core. During the pressure test I noticed an ever so slight tiny bubbling at the front LH water port at the intake when the pressure test reached 14psi. I decided to use the GM cooling system tablets and it solved the problem. I also didn't have a great seal at both ends of the upper radiator hose but opted to replace it as the alternater belt had dug into the hose under hard acceleration. I also ran a pressure test on the original RC-15 radiator cap and noticed it would "open" anywhere betweem 7 and 11psi so I bought a new Moroso cap that tested perfectly at 15psi to run for now. I drove the car to work and told my buddy to bring his Z. I think we had the coolest cars in the staff lot! During the morning commute the temp held steady at 190-195. On the way home in the afternoon stop and go traffic on 101 the outside temps passing through Gilroy were around 105F. My commute in the traffic and heat was over and hour and the temp held steady between 195-210 with zero leaks and no coolant went into the overflow tank as it had previously at lower temps. I'm using a 195 degree Robert Shaw thermostat, original gm fan, original gm shroud, replacement standard duty fan clutch hayden 2713, and an aluminum radiator 2 core 1.25" tubes exact fit painted Eastwood rad black. I'm considering buying the heavy duty fan clutch that locks up a bit sooner to keep temps closer to 190 but my current setup seems to work just fine. |
I would put some sort of theft device on your car.

I was reading my gauge incorrectly. The hottest the car gets is a tad over 200. Here is a reading from today at a stoplight in 93 degree heat. The needle is in the same spot as it was on the 101 south in traffic.

One of my favorite stories about the car was told to me recently by his son Todd. Todd says you could hear Bruce Camaro flying home in the Camaro and his Mom would tell the kids "Here he comes, open the garage". Shortly after parking the Camaro in the garage Todd says you'd hear the Cops passing by looking for him.
Here is my favorite photo of Bruce proudly posing with his car ~1968. Can anyone tell what city in Ohio this is? |

The photo was taken on N Sandusky St in Delaware OH! Here is the google street view. The Klein's Dept store was located at 55. N Sandusky St. User bammbam65 on Instagram is who mentioned the dept store was located on that street.

Very cool. Just a observation, but you have way too much air in the rear tires.

Here are some shots from Laguna Seca Cars and Coffee this morning. Orrin Holt's 69Z also pictured.

I wonder if you ever just sit and watch everyone's reactions when they see this car for the first time....I can only imagine 1000% in favor.

Here is an interior photo of the '55 Bruce got himself into trouble with before serving overseas as part of the Vietnam War effort. He would get so many points on his driving record for racing/speeding that he would have to attend court. Bruce said no insurance company would cover him. The judge then offered him jail time or to serve. He chose the latter.
Also pictured is the 66 Chevelle he crashed upon his return from overseas. Bruce's son Todd, who provided the photos, said Bruce had the '66 repaired before trading it in for the Camaro. This explains why the "new" Chevelle was a trade in on the sales paperwork. I'm still hoping Todd is able to find more on the car including the POP. He is slowly going through everything. Bruce said the 55 would rot on his property and he scrapped it. However, Todd says Bruce cut out the dash and saved it before having the car scrapped. |
Any updates on your car Jose?

My family and I are enjoying the car, I drive it often. Cars and Coffee, dropping my son (kindergarten) to school, or just going for a cruise. My youngest son (2) likes to hang out in the car at home like it's his playpen. He calls it the "Daddy Vroom Vroom" or the "Daddy Bus" (every car to him he calls bus).
I did run into a few issues. Under hard acceleration the alt pulley would cut into the factory style rad hose causing a leak so I swapped it out for a Gates 20827 that I trimmed to fit. Now I can put the pedal to the floor without wondering if I cut into the hose. The other issue I ran into was on the way home from picking up pizza with my son, it began to smell rich and was low on power. I made it home and parked the car in the driveway. Later when I went to park the car in the garage it wouldn't fire but occasionally cough. I ended up flooding it so I pulled the plugs and changed the oil. I pulled the cap to discover the lead wire somehow got disconnected. I reconnected the wire and it fired right up with much more "bang". I wonder how long the lead wire had a bad connection. I also bought a 70s era 8 track player that didnt pass bench testing. It will need repair so I'm sending it out for repairs before install. I am excited about getting that in. I even bought my first NOS 8 track cassette. I have everything to rebuild the 12 bolt but just haven't got around to it. More to come soon including hidden 2 step/rev limiter install (Omex Clubman), Original Hurst Chrome button line loc install, factory tach correction/added cable drive tach, subframe connectors With the great weather we are having here I'm looking forward to taking it out this weekend. |
Nice trouble shooting on the Primary lead wire. Was just talking to someone about your camaro and couldn't find this topic.
Thanks for bringing it back to the top. |
Awesome update Jose. You are living the dream JB.

Finally got around to adjusting the tach. I removed the driver seat, laid on my back with my head/arm behind the dash. With a small screwdriver I adjusted the tach and this is best I could get it. From idle to 2000rpm it reads around 150-200rpm too high but from 2000-7000rpm it's dead on. Prior to adjustment, when I was cruising at 2800rpm the tach would read around 3500rpm. The tach photo is when receiving a 3000rpm signal.
I also mocked up the line lock button. |
How were you able to adjust the tach needle?

With all of that said the tach needle itself when the car is off rests about 100-200rpm too high, but since my readings were accurate from 2000-7000rpm after adjustment it was fine by me. |
Jose,
Did the tach always “zero” At 100-200 or was that after the adjustment. Moving the potentiometer shouldn’t affect the zero reading. I love the chrome line lock button. Fancy! Jason |

Here is my draft wiring diagram that will allow me to use the chrome lineloc button in traditional fashion for burnouts.
With the flip of a switch however, I can depress the clutch and hold the brake, the chrome button will only need to be pressed once, and will engage a latching relay that will hold the line loc and launch rpm limiter on the Omex clubman. When the clutch is released it will disengage both the line loc and launch rpm limit. The omex clubman has 2 wires coming out of the box which connects to a normally open switch, when the circuit is closed it activated the 2 step. Other systems simply use a 12 volt feed. Anyway this is the reason for the 3rd relay. |

Revised wiring diagram using a single 6 pin on off on switch. I am happy about this one because it "hides" any evidence of additional 2 step switches/buttons. I wrote this on on a small paper. The center relay has a jumper from the 85 to 87 just as the first draft but it may be difficult to see.

I know I’ve said this in the past, but I love this street warrior!

Jose,
Sincerely, ! Thank YOU ! We Just Adjusted Johns 67 Tach! successfully. Using your TIP |

Hey glad my post helped but I just followed Jason's @SuperNovaSS tip. Looks like Johns tach needle may rest a tad above zero like mine. Update: I sent the radio guy a spare radio as the Motorola I originally sent had a bad am tuner gear. I bought a spare radio for about 20 bucks and hoping between the 2 radios I can make one ready to go. I want to get the radio situated before I do any mocking up of the lineloc/2 step relays behind the dash. |
All gauge readings are now accurate! The super wide ratio trans is a game changer. I like the starting line ratio yet with the 3.31's I can still cruise to work on the freeway. My morning commute is a little over an hour and I'm enjoying every minute of it. I get the nods, waves, and honks throughout the drive. I'd like to think seeing my car is like a breath of fresh air for the other commuters, at least that's how I feel when I see a cool car on the road.

The cool thing about Cars and Coffee in Seaside is there is a playground next door so my boys enjoy going with me.
Also a pic of my yardart! No other updates |
I wish there were more cars like yours Jose at my local cars and coffee!
