You are no longer A12 Dave...........you are Super Dave!
Sweet Jesus.........do you sleep? |
Thanks guys!!:cool2: Yes, I sleep.....that’s the hours between 2am and 3:15am.
I was thinking of prioritizing and dividing my day to get more done. Half day working on the Ranch, half day working on the Cuda, and the other half day working on the 507, with the last half of the day posting up what I did the last three halves of the day!:dunno: Then I realized my math was off and that there’s not four halves in a day, so that last half might have to go  I also decided to go get checked out in a Cherokee today since I’ve got so much free time that I’m scrounging for things to do goggles More to come...... Cheers:beers: Dave PS; Bill.....coffee.....5 gallons.....:cool2: |
You forgot about the other half of the day when you are working on the calendar.
|
Don't forget that Dave is also the guy flying those UFOs spotted in the recently released govt videos.
That's his secret - he's a time traveling, autobodyman from the future. |

Happy Memorial Day fellow Yenkonians!
With this past week full of administrative duties with my folks settling in next door, it rained today so I was able to resume Cuda duties since Ranch stuff can't happen in the rain! I finished the final metal work on the fenders with two patches....well, three.... needed so now Crusty is no longer Crusty! Woohoo! I also finished the stripping of the FC7. Liquid stripper followed by a putty knife followed by an N95 mask (the real reason you need one! :rolleyes2:) followed by 80 grit. You can see my enthusiasm for bubbling paint and if you think that's impressive, you should see me watching paint dry!:hmmm: So here we are in two coats of DP. One might note that the fenders aren't aligned nor is the front fascia panel. And one would be correct! These have to come back off to get epoxy on the backside and then I'll bolt them back on along with the hood and valances once those are epoxied too. That way, just like the dip tank would do, epoxy all over and then overspray with FC7 to finish! With fresh bare metal I just wanted to get the exterior in epoxy today. Alignment later. Now, Steve isn't paying me for all this extra small detail work. Actually, Steve's not paying me for ANY of this work!:eek2: But this is how the SuperDave machine rolls. Actually, I don't know what that means, but while we figure that out, enjoy the pics! This week will be window channel clean out, door jamb stripping and priming along with tail panel and trunk driptray stripping! Cheers:beers: Dave |

And here's the primer! Had to upload in another reply since for some reason it jammed the site loading all these photos! :hmmm:
Cheers:beers: Dave |

And then of course, one has to wonder what happened to all that paint. Well, here's the remnants all over the floor, my tools, and up my nostrils:hmmm:. I felt like I was trapped in a Prince movie! Like a purple haze.... "I never meant to cause you, any sorrow.....I never meant to cause yoooooouuu any pain":rolleyes2: Yeah.. you know what I'm taking about. :cool2:
Cheers :beers: Dave |
Purple Haze was Hendrix, Purple Rain was Prince. Nice work Dave!

Nice progress SuperDave.
The floor looks like Violet Beauregarde just stopped in for a visited. And stop poking at that bubbling paint! You'll put your eye out! Money coming next week, now that all the parts we ordered actually arrived down there after multiple reorders due to damage, losses by shippers, and one downright theft by Fedex ground! You’re moving at Ludicrous Speed, man!!! |
Yes, I think I meant to write purple rain. But since my head was full of purpleness, thoughts were rerouted and what I was thinking wasn’t typed and what was typed was what I wasn’t thinking...er...something like that:dunno:
Lots more bumps and dings in this old gal than I expected. That will delay paint by, oh, I’d say at least a few days. Of course all that original Bondo is gone and I’ll try and bang out most of those dents. More this week!! I’m anxious to fit those Elsa...elistom...elastic....rubber bumpers!!!:3gears: Cheers:beers: Dave |

As a matter of fact, there Normy, if I may interject, there are officially known as Supercalifrag-elastic bumpers, originally invented by little known inventor, M. Poppins, in England in the mid 1960's.

I believe it's pronounced "Nahmy"... And all I know is I need a fancy paint additive for these new-fangled bumper thingies! But no matter.... they'll soon be mounted up!
A good day today. Window channels de-gooiefied of all that vulcanized kryptonite sealer they used to secure them in place, yet mysteriously, still allowing water to get through and rust out the channel! But with extra scrap metal laying around it's easy-peasy to patch it up! The satin eggshell white exterior grade house paint from Sears is all off the door jambs and for the time being, the car is devoid of any FC7 on the exterior! Underside of the valances and such are all primed in DPLF and I'll be assembling the car here later this will which will start the panel alignment and block sanding! Woohoo! Umm...I think:hmmm: More to come... Cheers:beers: Dave |

How did you preserve the door tag on the driver's door? Careful painters tape? |
I hand stripped around the vin tag, then masked it off with electrical tape. Now that the epoxy is sprayed, a magnet cut to fit the exact size of the decal will cover it from any primer that may get sprayed onto it accidentally. When I spray the fill primer, I’ll tape it off again:biggthumpup:
Cheers:beers: Dave |

Today was body panel alignment day! And although somewhat happy, I'm not entirely happy, but I'm happy about the progress. Although I'm not happy with some aftermarket part fitment (imagine that! :hmmm:) but that can be fixed. I'm the King of Tweaking! I'm not sure if that was politically correct or not, but I'm sticking with it!
More this week. Tomorrow I'm hitting the skys in a Cherokee Warrior to go see a friend in Houston, so nothing going down tomorrow. But hope by the weekend I'll run up to Ft. Worth and hit the paint shop for the final round of supplies: Base, Clear, some extra DPLF, and the flex agent for the bumpers. Cheers:beers: Dave |

Driver's side is pretty much aligned up. I think I need to move the door back 1/8th of an inch, but the body line matches up perfectly! Hood is lined up but running out of adjustment play in the direction I need it to go.
Passenger door needs work...it needs to rotate counter clockwise a tad to lower the rear and raise the front. Mopars aren't really known for "quality" gaps and panel alignment, but Steve-O demands the best! Or, at least as best as I can get it before I just give up!:hmmm::biggthumpup::tongue: More to come..... Cheers :beers: Dave |

..... and then this rolled in today! There's my folks house on the adjacent 5 acres to me. Looks like I'm not working on the fence today! :eek2::thumbsdown:
Cheers:beers: Dave |

I remember when we did the yellow 71 hemicuda ragtop. I used NOS Cuda fenders and they were terrible. They both had major dip zones on the fender tops where they ran parallel to the hood. It almost looked like an AAR Cuda with a warped fiberglas hood, bulging in the middle, only it wasn't the hood that was bad - it was the fenders. And one of the NOS convertible quarters we used was 1/2" longer than the other. It had to be sectioned and rewelded back together to work. I am simply amazed at the progress you are making. Got any more land next door? I think I'm gonna retire and just move down there so we can open up a shop that only works on our own stuff. |

Wow..hope you didn't get any damage. That looks like a wall cloud back there! |
We sat on our porch and watched the same storm come down from the North. Amazing clouds.
|
Oh yeah, I forgot you were just South of me Timbo! From now on, I’ll text you “Iiinnncoming!!!”:rolleyes2:
Thanks for the concern, Bruce. Nothing major for us here. It was more to the West. Cheers:beers: Dave |
Good to hear, Dave!

I just noticed something while perusing the thread. Remember the "4" and "2" that were crayoned on the inner wheelhouses inside the car? They just happen to match the "4" and "2" that are stamped on the upper right corner of the fender tag. They are line inspector ID stamps.
|
Hmmmmm....yes, but would this be for one inspector? And if that’s the case, they’d be located together, no? And with that, if it’s two inspectors, then why would they be located on the same part of the car only feet apart?:hmmm: But I agree they’re inspector marks!
Another thing is like on the Beater Bee, the penmanship on the Broadcast Sheet that says “WM23” and “M6X” were the same as the “G70 Red” tire size written on the underside of the deck lid. Interesting! I guess handwriting guy had a pretty cushy gig back then! 8hrs of panel alignment, priming, blasting smaller parts.....update to come!!! Cheers:beers: Dave |
Dave:
That "G70 Red" on the deck lid - Plymouth stopped using redlines after 1969. RWL for 1970. They weren't an option. Just RWL and white lines. Plus the 70 Cuda line used F70 as STD with E60 optional except the Hemi which got F60s. ?? The only Chrysler cars to use G70 redlines were the 1969 A12 440+6 Road Runner and Super Bee (15"). Only one other car used those tires: 1969 Impala SS 427. |
Maybe one inspector was assigned to the passenger side, and one to the driver's side of the production line? Or they were playing a game: "I'm thinking of a number between 2 and 4...
|
Lee, you might have overlooked it. I was referring to my Beater Bee’s (A12 Super Bee) tire and wheel combo, not the Cudas! The writing on the deck lid matched the writing on the Broadcast Sheet. Same guy wrote both, I believe.
F70 RWL Polyglass 14” For the Cuda:3gears: Cheers Dave |

Here's a photo Dave sent me today. He's busy working on the 'cuda instead of posting updates. (which is fine with me). :-)
|
So Dave which is it?
You are either THE fastest body man on Planet Earth or you have a severe case of insomnia. |
6 Attachment(s)
Oh, now come on Lee. You know neither of those are true! Ok, maybe that insomniac thing. Does that have beer in it? :confused2: But as of today, the trunk, jambs, and engine bay are ready for paint! :burnout:
A good day of aligning body panels, followed by another day of aligning body panels, chased by another day of... you guessed it... aligning body panels. Ya know, I really liked that A12. No damn hood to align. And tweak on end of the hood a certain way and the door on my Ram 2500 doesn't shut right! Seriously? But no matter, after several hours of struggling I think it's looking pretty good. And now that I'm devoid of fingerprints due to hand sanding the trunk, jambs and engine bay, time to give the paws a rest and break out the long boards for a block-fest to end all block fests! :eek2: Not entirely happy with the rear valance alignment so I'll be slicing that up a bit to make fit better. I used Slicksand on the trunk floor and interior to fill in the small voids. It did wonders for filling in the pitting in the trunk. Also blasted the bumper brackets. A productive week with more to come next week. You won't want to miss those episodes! :bs: Cheers:beers: Dave |

More panel pics and the rear valance that's going to need the Super Dave touch!
Cheers :beers: Dave |

Out comes the 3M dry guide coat and the block party has begun! I was eyeballing the hood and something just didn't seem right. Looking at the rear part of it, the lip actually flares inward at the end. Knowing Steve and knowing I'd never hear the end of it if I returned the car to him in this state, I sliced a little, bent a little, and will weld up the gap to fill in the slice. Presto! A lined up hood! More on that on the next update. I'm very happy with the hood lines and the front of the car is down to 220.
Luckily, most of the dings are on the body line, so that's good. :rolleyes2::no: More to come tomorrow as I hit the doors and roof! Cheers:beers: Dave |
LOL, What, me worry???
The hidden benefit of having someone with OCD doing the body and paint on this car is that he is never satisfied with his own superhuman efforts. I guess I will just have to "settle" for the purple car being perfect. (when perfect most likely isn't enough for SuperDave). Keep up the great work! |
Thanks, Steve! But perfect? Oh no, nothing I do is perfect. Not by a long shot! Don’t you remember Mothzilla landing on my Bee’s fender during the clear? Let’s also not forget the Great Wall of China run on the last coat of clear on the Mustang. And who could forget the “WTF? Why would they put the reducer and Wax/Degreaser in the same style can?!?!?!?” when I was painting the Viper’s rocker panels!!!!!:bs: Oh yeah, this and more are all things to come during the Purple Haze shoot!:scholar::eek2:
I’m creating Jigasaurus III for the bumpers and small painted parts like the marker bezels and mirrors. Enough tippity type.....time to block!!!! Update comin’ in HOT later today!!!:burnout: Cheers:beers: Dave |
2 Attachment(s)
Alrighty, where was I? Oh yeah! Block-City!:cool2:
As I stated before, luckily all the dings are on the body line:frown: But after the initial round of blocking, I'm pretty happy so far. Round one of pics.... hey? Where'd that body line go? :dunno: Cheers:beers: Dave |
7 Attachment(s)
Why, there it is! Of course, after I pounded the door back out then worked some magic on the dents.
Cheers Dave |

Extremely happy so far. I think....:dunno:
I'll let this sit then tomorrow out comes more guide coat and 220! Cheers Dave |

.... block... block... sand... sand... oh what a pain in the a$$ it is! Wasn't there a commercial like that?:hmmm:
We're at 220 but I'm not happy with a few areas so more blocking. I was surprised at the trunk lid. I felt like Red Beard in the Caribbean with all the freakin' waves! A lot more work ahead of me than planned, so it might take another day! More blocking tomorrow! And there next day...aaaaaaand the next day. Soooo much freaking fun! Even a few action shots so you know it's me! Cheers:beers: Dave |

Some more of the other side, then prime. The darker primer is the heavier stuff so I can get those lines crisp. Lighter gray is the 4:1:1 mix.
That's 9hrs today. I think it's refreshment time! Cheers :beers: Dave |
