Those look great. I really need to swap out my 15x10's for 15x8's on the rear and 15x7's for 14x6 for the front. The look is so much nicer.

Another update on my pressure plate issue.....the McLeod pressure plate they they adjusted for me worked fine for normal driving but when at a dead stop and launching the car, on the street mind you, it slipped.....AGAIN. Apparently the 2800 pound clamping force, that they guaranteed to work, isn’t enough!!! So, I’m getting a refund on the pressure plate as soon as I take it out and send it back to them.

Now, after a lot of research and talking with a new company, Advanced Clutch Technology (ACT), out of Lancaster, CA, has a diaphragm pressure plate and organic disc that has 3900 pounds of clamping force. Stock is about 3000 pounds. I should be getting it later next week because they have to make the disc and it takes 3-4 days to get to Wisconsin from California.

This kit should work........keep your fingers crossed!!!

Glad you are getting a refund.
Well done :)

The ACT clutch kit is on its way.....I should get it by the end of this week or early next week.

On a side note......I’m still fighting a gremlin with what I believe to be an ignition problem. I thought I had it solved when I eliminated the CDI box but it’s acting up again. It started fine this spring but anytime I get the rpms up over 4000 or the secondaries kick it, it spits, sputters and sometimes backfires. The other day, I barely got it home......had to keep the rpms up over 1500 to keep it running.

I talked with a friend today (electrical genius) and he said since my Mallory Unilite distributor is old, that the ignition module might be bad....especially since I’ve replaced and/or eliminated everything else. He said he had the same thing happen to him and that was his issue.

So I took the distributor cap off and found an e-clip sitting in the distributor, I have no idea where that came from or where it goes/went. I then took the distributor out to make sure I ordered the correct ignition module and noticed the shaft was moving up and down quite a bit. As I spun it, I noticed the head of a screw was marred up from hitting/rubbing on something.....like the bottom of the plate where the module bolts to. So I bit the bullitt and ordered a new distributor, new Comp Cams composite gear among other things for the clutch replacement.

When I get the distributor installed, EVERYTHING for my ignition will be new!!! $$$$$$$

Let’s hope this resolve this issue.......I need to have it running good for the NOCC show or Dan will be upset.......and we don’t want to do that!!!

You have 2 months.....you have plenty of time.
Sounds like you have already found the problem :)

With a LSA you wouldn't have those issues...…….. LOL

Putting an LS in the car is taking the easy way out.....lol

The car has ran great for 9 years.....this is just a little hiccup that will be resolved in a couple weeks or less....hopefully..... #crossingfingers

So, I had to wait for the correct distributor gear as I ordered exactly what I had on the old distributor, which is the same part number. Well the old distributor has a .491 diameter shaft and the new one is .500. 😡

I actually read the instructions on the wiring and it said to install a 1.6 ohm resistor.....although my old one didn't need one. So I ordered that too and installed it along with the correct distributor gear. It started right up and seems to run good. I need to set the timing tomorrow. “Maybe” take it for a spin too!!!

Spoke too soon......still runs like S#*T.........gonna have to take it to a friend’s shop......I’m out of "answers"....:mad::mad:

I found my issue with the car running bad......a couple years ago I got a wire hot but didn’t seem to be too bad......well, it was and it finally came back to haunt me. It was the resistor wire that fed the coil.

I had a friend tell me to run a wire directly from my battery to my 1.6 ohm resistor for the new distributor. It fired right up and ran great. So I ordered a new engine wire harness and it arrived yesterday. I will be installing it this weekend.

Meanwhile, my new clutch arrived late last week, so I started installing that on Monday.

I thought I’d better replace the pilot bushing since it was 10 years old. So, I tried using this Lisle Pilot Bushing Removal Tool but once it filled the cavity with grease, THAT WAS IT!!! I couldn’t get enough pressure on the grease gun to hydraulically push the bushing out.

I got on YouTube and found out that bread works great......not as messy as grease. So I got my input shaft alignment tool that I bought from Crash at last years MCACN show, pushed bread in the cavity and pounded away....it worked like “sliced bread”.

Here are some pictures of the new Advanced Clutch Technology (ATC) clutch kit. This pressure plate seems heavier than the McLeod and Hays. Maybe because it’s SFI rated where the other two weren’t.....at least I know the Hays wasn’t. The fingers are bent different too......? The organic disc appears solid also.....well built.

I finished installing it yesterday evening. I came home from work today and fired it up.....rowed through the gears a little while the car was still on jack stands. Everything seemed normal but the true test will be when I get it back on the road.

On a side note, the foot pressure is a little heavier than the Hays Street/Strip I had in the car previously......but not much more.

Many people already know this, but for those who don't, if you get a new pilot bushing and a magnet sticks to it, don't use it. Many of the bushings that are being sold today have iron in them. They will wear out quickly and may damage the input shaft.

scuncio 06-14-2019 03:54 PM

That is one serious looking clutch. Let us know how it works out for you.

Nice Kurt. You gots to be stoked to drive her!!!

Great info on the clutch kit Kurt. Hope to hear how it works for you.

Have fun...

I installed the one that was in it 10 years ago.....after I removed it, I put a magnet on it and it didn’t stick. He new one is a RAM pilot bushing. I checked the reviews on Summit Racing and they were all good. I put a magnet on it prior to installing it and it too was non magnetic.

I’m really excited and apprehensive at the same time...it’s been since July at the Super Car Reunion that I could really drive the car as that’s when the clutch finally had enough.

I did get the new engine harness installed today after I got a little motivation (aka nap) :-) and my lawn cut.

It took a little bit due to my inexperience. I have to tidy things up when I get it back on the ground but I did try it out temporarily, without the CDI box, and it fired RIGHT up. I didn’t even have to pump it first.......and it idled all on its own (no choke). It’s better than any LS......that’s for sure! :scholar:

I’ll take a picture of the old wire harness tomorrow......it’s bad and definitely modified.

I have a friend coming over Tuesday to help me install/wire the CDI box and make things look good........among other things........shhhhh......it’s a secret. :naughty:

We cannot tell you....as you are no longer in the Chevelle Family.
You’ll just have to wait until NOCC :)

Happy Fathers Day to me!!!! After LOTS of frustration, time and money, I finally have the Blue Bomber running good again. All new ignition along with a new ACT clutch. I had a friend help me wire the retro ignition box up Sunday and it runs fantastic!!!! I still have to get a module for my tach to work, adjust my clutch a little and a few other minor things and I should be ready for the big car shows in Ohio and Chicago. Hopefully good enough to race it In Ohio.

I took it out in the country and tested the new clutch and so far, it seems to be what I needed.....it did everything I asked it to do. :naughty:

Thanks to everyone who helped and gave me ideas for troubleshooting the issues.

Here’s a couple pictures of the old harness. There was definitely some modifications made to this harness at some point. I really should have changed it a long time ago....... :hmmm:

I’m a little late on any updates with the Chevelle but better late than never.

I took it down to the NOCC show in August. Went to Dragway 42. Made one pass with the new ignition and clutch. It ran 12.4x. Not bad for a new setup but the clutch hit really hard when I launched. It actually scared the crap out of me. After about two hours, we finally got to make another pass. When I launched it, something broke, so I slammed on the breaks. We pushed it outfield the way and determined that something in the rear end broke.

Once I got it home and pulled the cover, I broke the spider gears and spring plates. I took it to a guy in Hebron Illinois, his name is Bob Kelso. Lots of knowledge at his shop.....he rebuilt it and added a vintage Geis aluminum rear end cover (Geis Girdle).

I’ve driven it a little since then and actually went on a 230 mile trip and it ran great.

Now I’m getting it ready for MCACN to be in the Post Sedan Invitational Display.
