Hook & Ladder Co. 8 Fire Station, TriBeCa, New York. The interior of the famous “Ghostbusters” headquarters was shot at a since-decommissioned fire station in Los Angeles. But the exterior building used in the film belongs to a fully operational fire station in New York’s downtown TriBeCa district. |

For the dystopian wasteland of “Mad Max: Fury Road”, director George Miller kept the story in Australia but turned the sand dunes of the Namib Desert into an oil-drenched playground. The film took the region’s stunning color scheme and flipped it on its head, turning the sand palate into deep burnt oranges and turning the streaks of sky-blue into an endless abyss. |

In the memorable final scene of “Thelma & Louise,” the women find themselves outrunning the police and arriving at a dead end on the edge of the Grand Canyon. In actuality, the film’s third act was shot in and around the gorgeous red rocks of Moab, Utah, which stood in for the famous national park. Today, Moab is still used as a primary filming location for a number of projects, most recently HBO’s “Westworld”. |

I can't stop thinking that this 1966 L79 Nova SS looks like a "grandma" car because of the vinyl top/color combo. |

----Here in southeast Michigan we are intentsly proud of our Warthogs. Selfridge AFB is a center for them and my wife and I see them fly above the Saint Clair river (border between us and the good guy Canucks) right over our house all the time. Its a beautiful thing and (at least with us) promotes an intense sense of pride in our country!...….Bill S

An airplane that drug lord Pablo Escobar used for smuggling cocaine adorns the entrance of Hacienda Nápoles. His once lavish estate is now a theme park with animal exhibits, waterslides, and dinosaur statues. |

A sun star clings to tree kelp in the chilly South Atlantic off the coast of Bird Island in what looks like an underwater rain forest. The ridges that form the Falklands force nutrients up from the deep, creating a rich marine world that attracts all manner of fish, mammals, and birds. |

Both male and female reindeer grow antlers. But males shed them in the fall and females shed them in the spring. So Santa’s reindeer are actually female. |

The Eiffel Tower was intended for Barcelona. The Spanish city thought the design was too ugly, so Gustave Eiffel pitched it to Paris instead for its 1889 International Exposition. |

Why is a labor stoppage called a "strike"? Because in 1768, English sailors unhappy about a wage cut expressed their anger by taking down, or striking, the sails on ships in the port of London. |

Harrison Ford, despite working with Lucas before in American Graffiti, was never considered for the role of Han Solo. He was hired to read against the actors auditioning for A New Hope, but Lucas was so impressed with his reading, he chose to give him the role. |

Before the film's release, George Lucas showed an early cut of A New Hope to director friends Brian De Palma, John Milius and Steven Spielberg. All of them, including Lucas, felt the film was a disappointment with the exception of Spielberg, who thought it was bound to be a hit. |

The sound of the lightsabers were created by sound designer Ben Burtt by waving the microphone across two humming old movie projectors. He later incorporated the buzzing sound after recording a tube television buzz with a broken tape recorder. |

Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) was never intended to also voice his character until post-production. Originally, 3PO was meant to sound like a "used-car salesman," but Lucas grew to like the "snooty British butler" voice Daniels had created. |

The extremely tall AT-AT Imperial walkers, first seen in the Hoth battle, were inspired by the walking machines described in H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds." The way they walk is based on elephants. |

While filming Jabba's sail barge scenes in Arizona, the set was often interrupted by dune buggy enthusiasts. In order to preserve the film's secrecy, producers told passersby that they were making a horror film called "Blue Harvest" with the tagline "Horror beyond imagination." They even had caps and T-shirts made up for the crew. Producers continued to use this faux title throughout production. |

You’ve probably heard of one of Monaco’s most famous landmarks, the Grand Casino de Monte Carlo. But what you may not have known is gambling is actually illegal for citizens of Monaco! In fact, even just setting foot in the casino is illegal for Monaco citizens, with the exception of its employees. However, the law doesn’t apply to more than 80% of the population, as foreign nationals residing in Monaco are exempt. |

NEW YORK — The new year means no more plastic foam coffee cups, takeout containers or packing peanuts in most places in the nation's largest city. New York City's long-planned ban took effect on Tuesday. The prohibition includes food containers and loose packing fill made from what's known as expanded polystyrene. Exceptions include butcher-counter containers for raw meat. |

The Coeur d’Alene Resort course’s 14th hole—the world’s only floating, moving golf green—presents a unique challenge to guests: Because of a system of submerged cables, the distance to play varies anywhere from 90 to 220 yards. If you make it on the green, a little ferry called the Putter shuttles you over to the 22,000-ton island in Lake Coeur d’Alene. |
