When this American epic space opera opened in theaters, its creator, writer-director George Lucas, was so certain it would flop that instead of attending the premiere he went on holiday in Hawaii with pal Steven Spielberg where the two came up with the idea for "Raiders of the Lost Ark." |

Film is known as a risky investment, so when a filmmaker takes a gamble on himself, it's a big deal. Lucas didn't want to share creative rights with a studio, so he self-financed the movie, putting the whole $18 million up, using profits from "Star Wars" and a bank loan. It paid off. Lucas was able to recoup his money within three months of the film's release. Some consider this Star Wars installment the best film of the franchise |

California will become the first state in the U.S. to prohibit the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores unless the animals are from a rescue organization. The new law, titled AB 485, is an effort to crack down on puppy mills. Starting on Jan 1. 2019, California pet shops will only be allowed to sell dogs, cats, and rabbits from shelters and rescues. |

A new law being unleashed in California on New Year's Day will give pets' rights some bite in court cases. The measure provides judges with the power to consider what's in the best interests of the animal in divorce cases, instead of treating them the way they've been treated by courts in the past — as physical property. |

65 years ago on December 30, 1953, Admiral and RCA put the first color televisions up for sale. At the time, TV itself was only a few years old, less than half of U.S. homes had a TV, and there was barely any color programming to watch and wouldn’t be for nearly a decade. |

Around the world, the Times Square ball drop is considered the official countdown to the New Year - so much so, in fact, that nearly one billion people tune in to watch the ceremony every year, according to the official Times Square website |

The ball weighs 11,875 pounds. From afar, it can be hard to tell just how massive the time ball really is: 12 feet in diameter. Today's ball is also covered with nearly 3,000 Waterford Crystal triangles and more than 32,000 LED lights. |

The main landing gear wheels stick out from the nacelles even when they are retracted, causing less damage to the aircraft if it has to land gear-up. |

On Nov. 16, 1970, the Air Force issued a request for proposal for a 30mm rapid fire cannon to use in the A-X Close Air Support aircraft. In June of 1971 General Electric and Philco Ford were selected to build the prototype gun, designated GAU-8. Besides development of the gun, the contract called for the development of four types of ammunition: Armor Piercing Incendiary, High Explosive Incendiary, Semi-Armor Piercing High Explosive and Target Practice. |
