Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Hi Ryan, looks like your having fun, enjoying the pictures. Don't forget to save the valve stem caps, may be original DILL. Just found a few old new ones.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Thanks Phil looking forward to getting the assembly manual.
I will check the caps, DILL? Maybe? Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Looked at some fluids today.
Is the silicone Brake fluid a good idea? I understand it resists soaking in water so seems like a good plan as the car will sit for a good portion of the year.Cost three times as much as Lucas Brake Fluid....must be good:-) Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...310_171539.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...310_165434.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Is this the best rear end gear lube? Says it needs no posi additive? Should I add additive to this stuff? Motorcraft or GM?
It also looks to be the right stuff for the Muncie...that would be nice to only keep one on hand:-) Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...310_164822.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...310_164839.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...310_164831.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...310_165205.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Couldn't find my brake tools, got new ones, just cheap stuff, not professional:-) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...310_174533.jpg

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ryan
I've been using the exact same brake tools for the last 20 years. |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
NO, YOU CANNOT MIX OR ADD....SILICONE BRAKE FLUID.....with Regular Brake Fluid.
Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I do add the additive to the Gear Oil.....regardless.
Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Thanks guys,
Can I use this oil in the Muncie as well? Says GL-4, GL-5 on the back..? Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Awesome car, looking forward to seeing it at MCACN!
I would advise against silicone brake fluid unless you are just looking for a show queen. The water not absorbing into the brake fluid isn't necessarily a good thing, as the water will then be capable of "flashing" to vapor if the fluid goes over the water's boiling point, which leads to soft pedal. The hygroscopic action of the brake fluid is there to be able to absorb some moisture without affecting braking performance until it becomes oversaturated (and you bleed). On the plus side, silicone brake fluid doesn't eat paint. But that's about the end of the plus sides... Luke |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Good to know!
Definitely not going to be a show car, so I will stay away from si. Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ryan can you please measure wheels and post oh a doing so. I've seen '69 W-31 cars that were "supposedly" original with different width rims. I don't know if the Canadian destination could be a factor. Soliciting opinions or comments on this. Please take a picture with ruler or tape measure showing the overall width. Thanks in advance.
On another note, my 4-speed guy says not to use synthetic gear lube in Muncies. Seems the oil is too slippery and won't cling to the rotating parts. |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Hi Dave, I will measure the rims but all have tires on so need to reach around them to get a width.
Hi Kurt, your vote is dually noted:-) you really beat on you M23:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Did some more digging tonight!
Found the casting numbers on the rear end, 402227. CFD ? Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2812-image.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I also found the stamp TM just as I suspected! Same as the black/topaz twin to my car:-)

Cleaned up and found stamps on the transmission as well
Haven't tried to decode them yet Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2815-image.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2816-image.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2817-image.jpg |

Hmmm, supposed to be an M20......... Can you type out the codes or post a link? Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
The letter "C" makes it a M22......if the internal gears haven't been changed.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
The tag on the side cover has numbers on it. That will be helpful to know what trans you have.
|
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
P= Muncie 4 speed
9= model year H= August 11= 11th day C= rock crusher M-22, 10 tooth input, 27 tooth output shaft. I also knew Ryan would be Whining Very Cool! Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Nick Morocco is checking if one of his C cases is closer to my build date;-) Maybe a trade?
Ryan The tag says 9503 and seems like 13 backwards at the end, my phone died as I cleaned the tag for good pictures:-( https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2832-image.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2834-image.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Is the stamp A38342 part of a VIN from the car it came from? Not enough digits?
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2835-image.jpg Is A Atlanta? Did this come out of a Chevelle? Ryan |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Plus - if you ever do get that dream 1969 Chevelle....you'll be kicking yourself for getting rid of an M22 - I certainly did.
Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
No intentions of getting rid of anything, just checking if Nick has a closer date M22:-)
Ryan I will talk to Al today, he was sure the original transmission was in the car but memories can fade. I hope this jogs his memory! |

Ryan </div></div> See the CT9.........that says it is an over-the-counter replacement trans, and the other number that starts with an A is the production number. Did the first owner have a warranty replacement trans done? |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I will know more after talking to Al:-) Man I love this car:-)
Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Well I got him thinking now!! He remembers ordering the HD 4 speed wide ratio, with 2.54 first gear, (I haven't checked that number) and both the bill of sale and GM docs show the M20... Al is thinking this over and will check with a friend that knows about the car. (I forgot to ask but I think he worked at the dealer?)
My assumption would be that he got a warranty transmission when the warranty engine went in..........the extra engine was purchased and installed in the last three years so chances of someone slipping in an M22 from 69 seems unlikely....TBD Ryan I will give him a couple days to ponder it:-) |

Can you post a picture of them? Ryan |
