was it a big block?

cheveslakr 04-08-2019 03:50 AM

I saw a '68 Impala, same as the one shown on the line in post 360 over the weekend, same colors, and the vinyl top had a 6 inch wide molding attached to the trunk lid. It's present on this car also. Half the width was ribbed while the lower half had the same grain as the vinyl roof and painted black. I was admiring it and the owner approached and explained that it was an option and the standard vinyl top was not extended down as far and didn't receive that molding. He claimed that option was extremely rare since I had never seen one, I bought it. Can't find that option in the option list so maybe he was mistaken??

Like this?

cheveslakr 04-08-2019 01:57 PM

Exactly Lee, thanx for that pic...even the same colors again. I thought that was a pretty cool piece of trim.

72 chevelle ss new on showroom floor.

SS427 04-15-2019 01:17 AM

With square hood stripes. Interesting.

StriperSS 04-15-2019 03:27 AM

Some dealers added stripes at their own bodyshops, and weren't terribly exact about it. I worked at a Chev Olds dealer in the 70's and masked quite a few new and used cars for stripes. In those days,I wasn't as accurate as I am now..................:)

cheveslakr 04-15-2019 04:28 AM

It appears to be a non-cowl hood with hood pins.

Mr70 04-15-2019 12:37 PM

That '72 SS Chevelle was talked about before. The dealership painted the stripes on after taking delivery on it's standard SS non flapper hood, which did include hood pins during 1972.

Postsedan 04-15-2019 12:43 PM

I would have added the stripes in my teenage days.....today, no stripes is way better.....the stripes hide the beauty of the car.....JMO.

I love those vintage photos of your z28. They really are a great trip down memory lane. Thank you for sharing them.

Very nice!!!! Seems to me I have a copy of an old ad from the Auto Shopper from back around this time with a white/red L72 convert. I NEED to see if I can find that ad and see if it is the same car..... Congrats is an understatement!

I was just offered my 69 SS427 convertible back from the person I sold it to in 2008. Unfortunately it is just too cost prohibitive to restore and not be upside down in. No rust body and frame on a California car but just missing too many parts.

69L78 04-30-2019 08:41 PM

Rick, Yes it was listed for sale in the Nov 1986 Auto Trader for $13k

SS427 04-30-2019 08:53 PM

Which is likely why I did not buy it back then. Another dumb decision. LOL

69L78 04-30-2019 10:01 PM

I made a mistake, it was listed in the Nov 1986 issue which I do have along with the complete dealer file.

Sorry for the poor quality pictures of pictures.....these were the cool cars in town back when I was in high school. All photos are from the late 70's / early 80's.

The photos with the guys standing around were taken right before they headed to the Street Machine Nationals in 1984-ish time frame.

74 Camaro LT running a 350 4 speed - love the snorkel scoop!

rest of pics. 1st pic is the day I brought the Camaro home. Early fall 79. Yes, I have owned this car 40 years. I also bought a Blue SS 350 Camaro just prior to this and sold it this past summer. I came to the realization, I would never restore another car. Period. So, time to let go of some dreams. Bought the Maroon Chevelle in 81. Nicest Chevelle I had. Sold it in the spring to a buddy in 82 ‘cause I was getting married. And I did, now, 37th year. My buddy still has the Chevelle.

That Chevelle looks identical to the one we bought new a Doc Stewart Chev in Clovis, NM ... Sad thing is we had it less then a year ... got orders to return to Vietnam and we sold it. I wasn't going to take it up to Wisconsin where my younger brother lived. So it was gone and we got a 64 Chevy station wagon -- loaded everything including wife and daughter. Dropped them at my parents and I was off to sunny Southeast Asia ...

My dads 1969 L78 we have been restoring how it looked in the late 70s and how it looked the last time it was driven in 1983. How it looks currently as well.
