Re: Traction bars

Do you have the special bolts with the grease fittings? These are cool looking even if they aren't as effective as the regular ladder bars. The will look good in Day 2 fashion.

Re: Traction bars

I do not have the special bolts. Any leads? Could put regular bolts on a more aggressive maintenance cycle for grease. Plans are to just clean the bars up as the underneath of my Chevelle is original. Should add to the knuckle-dragger image I'm looking for.

Re: Traction bars

Cool ladder bars. I don't think they will help much but they do remove one rubber bushing. You can try them and see how they effect the over all handling. The Lakewood bolts are hollow I would question there strength. I guess they were worried about bind if the grease gets washed out thus the service fitting. They remove the rear sway bar if the car was so equipped. Cool bars thanks for posting.

Re: Traction bars

They appear to hang below the bottom rim of the wheel, not good if you get a flat tire. I recall that being a no-no with some sanctioning bodies or vehicle safety regs. They do look cool though.

Yeah, and we all know it's a small price to pay for looking sh*t hot!

Good eye its in the NHRA rule book and may be in other sanctioning bodies rule book.
They are day two cool though.

They should have called these traction bars "wheel-savers"!

The Original TRACTION ACTION bars Were Tampo'd....Black Ink/Paint Stamp .
With or w/o a Lakewood decal.

@ questions.
1) Application? Guy I got them from dragged Camaros, but he hoarded everything. Can anyone confirm the application/usage?
2) Does anyone recognize what brand and age these are? They appear to have medium blue paint under the black.
As always, Thanks.

Re: Traction bars

I don't know how a guy can know so much about these vintage parts, but I am grateful!
You did not say, but would like to pin down the application? A few of the braces/bracketry threw me off, but then I thought maybe one bar was made for several applications? So this bar might work on Fomoco s & Mopars? ...In addition to Chevs

I have another real cheap looking set I got from the same place that I will post to id, as well. They have an unusual oval snubber.
Yes, I would be interested in the decal, at least to get a picture to duplicate , if permitted , or to buy

The bars might also be MAS they had the same blue color. let me check my old catalogs give me a day or so. It appears the bar were originally Chevy and someone welded on the FOMOCO brackets??? I have seen pics of them on Camaros etc and those Fomoco brackets were not on them.

Here's an ad from August '68 for Foxcraft traction bars. They appear to use the stock spring plate like the original Nickey/Bill Thomas bars did. There are some NOS Foxcraft bars for tri-five Chevys on ebay... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Foxcraft-NOS...item282e803162

I have a pair of those in the original box for Camaro-Nova. Bought them on eBay ten years ago for my '67 and never used them.

Here are some original Bill Thomas traction bars for a '67 Camaro. They appear to have been painted the same color silver-blue that they used on the '67 Z-28 factory headers. Somebody bent the ears for the lower shock mount for some reason but I'll work on getting that rectified.

Day2_69Z 08-28-2017 01:18 PM

Oh geez,,, Bill Thomas Headers are so not Day 2.... Factory support via "skunk race car shop"
You need to donate these wrong color , no collector flange wanna be headers to my Day 2 in disguise museum of orphans.
I'd even donate back to you 2 sets of Summit modern Chinese headers of your choice and a set of Mexican Hookers so you can stay in "tune"....
I may ,,,just saying, I may just put these on my '68 for shits n giggles.....

These are off a 50's Vette. Probably the shortest set made at 25" long. They are the later style, cause the wider spring pad and lack of a tail. They are also equal in length. What do those other ones measure without the tail? I can only guess that the unequal set-up was an early thing, before slapper bars were properly sorted.

Looks like I found a duplicate set to your red ones Paul, except for these are yellow. Not sure if they were always yellow but they do appear to have been shaved on the one side just like your red ones. The shaved side will have to mount inboard on my Camaro so that I can use existing shock mount tabs, or I'll need to weld another right front tab if I flip them around to have the shave edge outward mounted towards the tire.

I'm about to strip these and restore them with new color but you now have me thinking Lakewood orange/red which would also match the Lakewood roll bar, bell housing and driveshaft loop all in red? These are 25.25" front to back. I'd like to find another of the early style short snubbers like the one shown below if anyone has some old stock?

By the way gentlemen...wicked great thread you guys have contributed to here. I read all 38 pages today and got schooled!

I'd love to find a set of those white Drag Dimension bars one day???

Salvatore 02-13-2018 04:22 PM

exact same bars I have on my camaro Graeme. Lakewoods from pre 71 or so.

NorCam 02-13-2018 05:11 PM

How far forward do they reach on the springs Sam? Assuming they're on a 69 I would imagine the snubbers are about 2" back from the eyelet?

x33rs 02-13-2018 07:03 PM

Here's a set that kind of look like post 346.

We've had these on the nomad since the mid 70's. I think my father bought them sometime in the 60's and ran them on one of his tri-5's back then.

I don't even remember what brand they are anymore. Sorry for the poor picture, that's all I can get at the moment.

x33rs 02-13-2018 07:03 PM

Nevermind, I'd have to resize the file, beyond my capabilities.

One bar that I didn't see much in this entire thread was the Hurst AdjustaBars. I know they weren't terribly popular but they did look kind cool.

x33rs 02-14-2018 06:34 PM

That looks like what I've done to standard Lakewood bars in the past. I'd take a square tube that fits inside the existing square and slide it in to make the bar longer and reach the spring eye where it should be. Then just weld it.

x33rs 02-14-2018 06:35 PM

Thanks for doing that Scuncio. Much appreciated.

What kind of bars are these? I hope they're Traction Action since I put the stickers on. I know they're Lakewood, the guy that put them on the Camaro back in the day confirmed it.

Edit: looks like they aren't. I know that even if they were, we don't have the JBolts. It's a U-bolt setup. Shoot. I'll probably still run the decals anyways.

scuncio 08-07-2018 11:22 PM

I don’t follow your reasoning. Those are J bolt style.

Oh, they are? I got a little confused by an ad on a previous page. That's a huge relief. I love the stickers but I'd feel a bit like a poser if they weren't the J-bolt bars.

Traffic Action wouldn't have the angle welded to the bottom for the J bolt bracket, would it?

Is that what that upside down triangle looking thing is?

big gear head 08-08-2018 12:29 PM

Yes. Welded to the bottom of the bar.

markinnaples 08-08-2018 01:52 PM

Did a lot of guys buy the J-Bolt kit for the Traffic...Action bars back in the day?
I remember way more Lakewood bars with the slanted front than the perpendicular/straight front like the Traction...Action bars.

The skinnier bars were Traffic Action and called Traction Action if they had the triangular piece underneath for the j bolts.

Just got these back from my powder coater, they turned out awesome. Plus I figured this traction bar page needed some action (traction action)

Postsedan 01-15-2019 08:29 PM

Perfect! Those would look awesome on a Van.....in a Van :)

MonteMike79 01-15-2019 08:36 PM

Looks great, I just bought a pair of those same bars on ebay. Couldn't believe someone from here didn't scoop them up before I did. I hope mine look as good as yours when I get done cleaning them up.
