Re: The new flying dutchman!
Ok, is this right? 12.5-1 496 with roller cam and 950 Holley in a second gen Nova? Cal traks and splt mono's?
Need to hear more on this combo? Like what heads? Any work in heads and intake? Coverter size, gears, tire size and weight? What RPM do you run this through? Have had a couple different combo's in my '69. 396/402, 427/390hp oval port motor that runs pretty good and for this car, something seems "off"? No disrespect, but might be able to get this running better. |
Re: The new flying dutchman!
I think he runs an 850 Holley and I beleive it is a 502 with a sold lifter roller. Its a foot brake race car so not much real advantage to the Cal Tracks IMO. If he changes the converter that car would even be faster. Correct me if I am wrong about the motor size Benny.
|
Re: The new flying dutchman!
454 punched out to a 496 Sammy. Atleast that's what the professor told me.
|
Re: The new flying dutchman!
Yes, the 496 is a 4.25 bore with extra stroke and the 502 gets there with a 4.5 bore. I'm right there with Jed- I've heard Benny say 496 a few times.
|
Re: The new flying dutchman!
OK, you guys got it!
|
Re: The new flying dutchman!
John, Some answers to some of your questions about the car. The motor is a 496 cu in. Solid roller cam, comp cam. 12.5 compression. Heads are stike force alum. Carb is a holley 850 double pumper. The car weighs 3350 no driver. I run a tubro 400 worked over. I shift the trans manually, more power. I have a 3,500 stall converter, with a 9 wide slick. Can;t get any more tire under the wheel well. I come off the line, about 1,600 to 1,800 RPMs. Shift at 6,500 RPMs. My best time was a 10;51 at 129.71 MPH. Best 60ft was 1;49. This car and I are old school NO electronics here!I hope I answered some of your questions, email me direct if you need more info! Thanks The Dutchman

Re: The new flying dutchman!
Tell him Professor, nothing trick on that red car. BBBBenny and the Jets. You are the man!!
|
Re: The new flying dutchman!
Benny, without the cam specs and rear gear, I see a few things you can try. CARB? I thought you put on a 950 CFM???
Your heads are HUGE for that combo? NEED some more RPM for sure with that 320cc (plus) intake port and 2.25 valve head. At 6500 RPM you have no real velocity to cylinder fill. I don't know if any work to yhe heads or intake, and I'm not familar with that Weiand intake. I would try 7500 in a hart beat, BIGGER carb and more RPM off the line! Example: My '69 Nova SS 396 car. ALL STEEL, 4 sp bench seat, 12 bolt with slapper bars, OEM rear springs. Motor, 402/375Hp OEM short. Yep standard bore and OEM standard crank and rods. ARP bolts and TRW factory replacements. 660 Comp roller. ’70 LS6 closed chamber heads with Manley 2.19/188 valve with 5 angle grind, port matched to Holley strip Dominator and 800+ Double pump Holley (reworked). M21 and 4.56 gear. Lakewood 90/10’s and 50/50 shocks with 9X29.5 firestone slick. FIRST FULL and ONLY ¼ mile pass, 10.47@126. Made 7 1/8 mile hits. Started with 7.11 and getting to 6.8? I recall. Got booted after that 10.47 for NO ROLLBAR. Just a street car with junk/OEM stuff. Even ran the rally rims. I’m sure the car would have went a 10.TEEN. THEN there was the nitrous but never used it. Think it would have ran 8’s. Now my other motor, 427/390Hp motor. Oval port 12-1 motor, .620 solid cam, 12-1 street motor, that also went 10.50’s but more street friendly. Now putting together a 475 inch ‘052’ ZL-1 block, ‘074’ head, ‘163/198’ intake again going into the streetcar, looking for a VERY low 9 and look completely stock. Now you see, today you don’t need much of a motor to run 10.0’s or better. Look at John Wilson’s ’67 PUMPGAS 496 Chevelle with OEM (781’s) ovalport heads. 9.50’s on a DOT tire. John |
Re: The new flying dutchman!
Now if you want to talk "trick" stuff, might get into the inner workings of my 498/1240Hp cast single motor? Now that's a piece.
|
Re: The new flying dutchman!
Your car is running real good EZ. Especially with those parts. Benny is about where he wants to be. No maintenance or race day tune-up for him. He rarely checks air pressure. Its a funzie thing for him cause he is an "old guy." Besides, the hair on his head will not take any runs over 130mph hence the only trick thing is a block of wood under the gas pedal.
|
Re: The new flying dutchman!
Yep I agree there Sam. YEARS ago we ran a IHRA B/D. NEVER worked on it and only ususally clean and fuel and tire pressure. For a car that was running 7.60's with a Cleveland Ford too. Man I miss those days, LOL
I have read about 70% of this thread. I just didn't want to see BBBenny just start dropping $$$$$ that he doesn't need too. His car runs well, just all too ofter people will start to say "you need this or that" just to line there own pockets, that's all. Look at this link: http://www.nescaracing.com/polishsneakers.html This should help explain and give an insight into times and $$$ spent. BTW that is a very old artical. I've owned that 427 for 5 years now myself. With todays technology, BOTH motors will run fast and into the 9's I believe. And these are both running DOT street tires and footbraking WITH the aid of a roller cam also. |
Re: The new flying dutchman!
I am with ya EZ!

Re: The new flying dutchman!
Here;s the update. I raced at Beaver Springs Dragway today. It was a hot day, but thats racing, in the summer. I won two rounds.Going to the third round, the weather got bad. They called the race, so every one left gets the payout. The car was running a 10;75 127 MPH. Bad air day. But we won some money!!! The Dutchman
