Re: RogerD's 1969 Dick Harrell Chevelle
Because I just read 15 pages and dont have time to read 25 more..... why was the car sold back in the day? Who did you sell it to back then? Did you keep the original paperwork or has it stayed with the car all this time ????
Awesome story!!! Thanks for sharing!!! |

Billy:
Page #20 post w/date correction (I traded it Oct 19, 1970) . . . -----Correction is: "dealer wholesaled it late '70/early '71" . . . GM warranty "CE" short block Dec 1969 . . . GM warranty "rebuild" CE block, Oct 1970 . . . Traded while at dealership for warranty CE block rebuild . . . I have pictures of the 1966 SS 396 Chevelle I traded along with the '66 paperwork . . . The vin from the '66 SS is shown on my '69 Dealer/customer invoice . . . Not a single picture of the '69 (just was not a priority back then). . . I have the window sticker and customer invoice from the '70 Camaro RS when I traded the '69 DH/COPO Chevelle . . . The '69 is listed on the '70 dealer paperwork . . . Kept this stuff along with various other trivia (a bible from 2nd grade, stuff from Boy Scouts, indian artifacts I found and various other trinkets. Just could never throw it away . . . I knew the Chevy dealership at which I traded the car very well - my (then) future father-in-law was their top salesman. He knew it was a Dick Harrell Chevelle "SUPERCAR" with a BIG motor and just couldn't wait for me to get rid of it. He shuddered every time I showed up to take my fiancee (now my wife for almost 40 years) on a date and pestered me constantly to trade it off. In the mid 70's, HP cars were in the dirt as far as trade in's went - the dealership wholesaled it in late '70/early '71 because they could not get rid of it . . . |

Hi Gang:
Today is a special day for Karen and me!! Two years ago today KenH and I were heading home from Ottawa, IL with traler in tow and an old Chevelle sitting on it. Pulled into the drive about 4:30 in the afternoon after a grueling 900+ mile drive. This evening, we will have a quiet celebration remembering the events from these past two years and also events from over 40 years ago!! Kind regards and best wishes today!!! |
Re: RogerD's 1969 Dick Harrell Chevelle
Awesome Roger!

Re: RogerD's 1969 Dick Harrell Chevelle
Enjoy it. Well worth it and I bet the car is real happy to be home again!

Re: RogerD's 1969 Dick Harrell Chevelle
Sad news this morning - we learned that Karen's classmate, Ben Houghton, passed away Saturday, Oct 22, 2011 :(
Summer of 1970, the other Race . . . The other race was just outside Karen's hometown of Gallatin, MO in the summer of 1970 shortly after we were engaged. She and a lifelong friend Janel Reynolds, were riding around with me that summer evening when we were “invited” to race Karen & Janel’s underclassman, Ben Houghton in his strong running Challenger 440 six pack. Junior Burke set it up on Highway 13 between Gallatin and Hamilton. Ben smoked his tires - I eased off the line and then hammered it to the turnaround. Flashing red lights in the distance heading our way halted a rematch . . . December 2010, I tracked Ben Houghton down to his mom’s place in Gallatin through long time friends, Frank and Kay Woodruff who still live in the area. Turns out Ben was visiting his mom (he lives in Georgia now) and was there for a few days – what luck! Ben remembered the “good old days” and our brief 1970 encounter. When we talked, he remembered that he “never lost a race” in his Challenger. I didn’t push the point with Ben – after all, it was over 40 years ago and lots of water under the bridge since then. Later that same day, Frank called to tell me about his conversation with Ben and mentioned Ben recounting that “his Challenger didn’t win one race with an Orange Chevelle after all” - we had a good laugh about that call. I spoke to Ben the next day and we had a good laugh as well. Didn’t really matter to Ben or me on who won the race – it was just good to finally hook up with Ben again and talk about old times . . . The other race . . . |
Re: RogerD's 1969 Dick Harrell Chevelle
My condolences to Ben's family....
Not only have you done a stellar job in restoring the car (not to mention your perseverance in FINDING it!), but your documentation of the stories and people related to the car are just amazing |
Re: RogerD's 1969 Dick Harrell Chevelle
Sorry to hear of your friend's loss Roger. You certainly have some great memories and it was nice that you hooked back up with him recently.

Re: RogerD's 1969 Dick Harrell Chevelle
Roger,
I hope your experience at MCACN was everything they promised you it would be. You were surrounded by some mighty fine folks in the COPO display and your Chevelle was certainly one of the highlights of the event. Unfortunately I only got to say Hi one time, but I hope to have another opportunity soon. |
