Sam
Your hired.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif JMO, I would not get it a big debate about the plating type.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Your choice of clear zinc is fine and may be correct for original Hurst stuff. And other Chevy stuff. I just happen to like the cad if you can get it. It does have a different look. It is a better protection, that is why is is still used allot in the aircraft industry. Carry on CDR |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
WOW!! Was just checking in to see if anyone had heard anything from our friends in Hawaii and happened upon this update. Don't know how but I had missed the entire Dec 09 post with all the deuce pics. The car looks FANTASTIC!!
Just reinforces the fact that we made the right decision to get it into the hands of someone who could give it the care it deserved. I also love the look of those traction bars. And that shifter looks amazing!! Earl and I can't wait to see it again. Just looking at the pics actually made my jaw drop. Am really looking forward to getting together with Sam and Schonye so we can chew the fat about the restoration and the good ole days. |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Linda - hope you and Earl can meet me and the Deuce at the November MCACN show in Chicago. Thanks for the kind words and for checking in Linda. Say "hey" to Earl. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif
P.S. Forgot to ask you when I visited you in December, the Deuce already had a decent Hurst shifter when it was delivered to you (another variation of the Competition Plus). I am curious why Earl transferred his Chevelle's Competition Plus in the Deuce. |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Earl says he just liked the feel of this shifter better. Probably because he was more used to it from running it in the Chevelle. Then he chuckled and said it just looked and felt "manlier"!
|
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Ha! I get that. The shifter handle you guys put in the Deuce is definitely a different angle. It angles back toward the seat and toward the driver.

Sam,
Now all you need is one of these....your choice of White w/black or Black w/white. Great job! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0/P1010153.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0/P1010154.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0/P1010152.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...0/P1010156.jpg Dan. |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Nice Dan! Actually, howz about black w/ "fur"?! This is Earl showing me the original flocked black Hurst "T" handle. Its a little long in the tooth so an NOS one will top the Hurst CP shift handle! I 'spose the cold western Penna winters made these puppies a requirement. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif

Here's another day-two component that will be going back on the car eventually. Schonye had his plater bring it back to new. Before....

Interesting "why-and" tag with an Australian connection. The original air cleaner element is in surprisingly good condition as is the plastic internal support frame...

Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Roger D and Bergy have inspired me to post some new stuff, although on a much smaller scale...
Making good headway on the restoration of my Mallory ignition system. Figured out how to do my own plating. Found the chemicals locally and mixed the solutions for the process. Felt like I am back in 8th grade science class . I am still working out the kinks in the plating process, but the results have been pretty good so far. STill have to assemble the ignition system and throw it on the a distributor machine, so I will update as it goes back together. Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Sam,
Looking good. Anodes, cathodes, +, -, electrons, neutrons and protons; I think you are now a plater and designated Mallory restoration expert. Are you happy with the results? I did the home phosphate kit at one time with limited unexpected (good) results and a buddy of mine tried the zinc plating deal, minimal success with that though. Parts look good overall. Looking forward to seeing the finished project. Phil W. |
Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
Thanks guys - havin' fun!
Woj, I did another batch tonight and I think I am getting the hang of it. Time, current, and surface area to be plated are the variables that have to be balanced. I'm getting bright, lusterous finish that looks like the fastener bins at the hardware store. I finished restoring the distributor body this evening too. I'll post some more progress shots tomorrow. P.S. Woj: I don't know if mixing my own solutions (so I know what is in there) is making a difference for me vs. the home kits. I did a bunch of research to determine what the correct ingredients and proportions should be. I am looking forward to the black zinc process as I really like this finish and I feel it is a very close to correct looking finish for many GM fasteners. |

Most of the distributor piece parts are plated except for some internal parts. Those and the Mallory coil I'll get to this weekend....

Sam, that stuff is looking great but you're working way too hard. Slap those parts together, throw them back on the car and go grab some gears!!!

Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
I hear you Linda. But, something your hubby said is just stickin' in my craw. He said <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">"that Mallory dual point ignition just woke that Deuce up"</span></span>. So I got to make sure it is in tip top shape so I can see for myself what a difference it makes

Re: Roof Deuce Restoration
You have someone with a distributor machine to adjust the points for you?
When I worked at a speed shop years ago we always adjuster the four lobe Mallory points on the machine to be sure the cylinders all fired at exactly 90 degree seperation. That's near impossible to do with a feeler guage. |
